Absurd that the guy who could write something as brilliant and touching as "Headlights" is still spending time writing immature, homophobic, lazy schlock like "Rap God."
Also funny that the guy who has previously admitted he "can't sing" and "ran them accents into the ground" SINGS (painfully) and does a YODA ACCENT on "Rhyme or Reason." And that sucks, because the song is good otherwise--and I love anything that brings attention to an all time great pop song like "Time of the Season."

Eminem has always been immature and homophobic. But at least he used to be able to rap.
His horrible lyrics were more acceptable when being irreverent was his entire shtick. Rapping those lyrics in his awful "serious" style is just bad. D/F.

The homophobia is creative stagnation at this point. In the 90's, it was part of 'controversial rabble-rouser' thing, and it "Ha ha, gays are gross, amiright?" jokes were common at the time. But now? It's immature, and out of touch, like nobody told him the gay rights movement has picked up a lot of steam since "The Marshall Mathers" CD dropped.

Everyone should listen to the PSB's great "The Night I Fell In Love" which addresses his homophobia. A better diss track there's ne'er been, probably because it's too humane and charitable to actually be a diss. I think Eminem and Dre responded by pretending to drive over the PSB in a video or something which argued that they weren't quite mature enough to take on the message.

Pretty much, and that persona of 'Slim Shady' seems even more antiquated given his huge issues.
It's funny more when someone's acting a buffoonish caricature, less so when the clown cries.

I was thinking the same thing this morning. A gay friend of mine was listening to the new record and talking about how he really likes Eminem. I agree, Eminem is good and I like a lot of his songs. But the homophobia thing makes me pause. I guess its just part of the act? But at this point, why?

Also, he's been usurped in the shock-rap shtick by Tyler, the Creator (who is a shittier rapper, but way more interesting).

Now, just so you know, Marshall has said recently (and previously) said that because he came up through the battle-rap world, he uses his anti-gay slurs as abstract insults against his enemies, rather than as plain homophobia.
His excuses haven't gotten any better over the years yet, either.

I think the "f-ggot as a blanket pejorative" things stems from people that used to be homophobic and used it heavily as an insult, then became friends with some gay people, but just never bothered to make an effort to stop using that word and want to justify themselves. It might actually shift away from being slur eventually, but it still kind of is. And given that Eminem has had outright homophobic lyrics in the past, it definitely reads a slur.
I can't, I just can't.
