In this day and age, there's really no excuse for using the word 'negro'. I have a feeling that if this girl was American and not Australian, more of you all would be calling her a racist.

The problem (from an American's perspective) is that "black people" and "negro" are NOT interchangeable. You keep saying "negro"/"black people" like they're two ways to express the same concept, but they're not. Calling someone a 'negro' is not equivalent to merely describing them as black. In America (and, it seems, NOT in Australia?), "negro" is a known slur for a black person. And most Americans will (assuming they aren't of the openly racist crowd that uses it) have a visceral negative reaction to the term "negro" whereas "black people" is basically what you are saying, it's just descriptive.
