This is a great question. My friends and I often wonder about this. The Reunion is the one song where it's obvious he does it. He might do it on the Our House verse when he comes with the faster flow near the end of his verse. I would like to see other examples of this as well.

This is niave as fuck, but i like to think he just hops in the studio and one takes it like Jay does. I picture him doing that with No Love and think its incredible, but obviously that can't be the case. He is a perfectionist and probably does each verse numerous times over.

Anyway, I like this thread and can't wait to see where people think he does this.

I'd like to know if 'Till I Collapse was done in one take, or if he was punching in.

Jay Z actually punch-ins each line. If he really doesn't write his lines, what he does is stand in front of a microphone, thinks of a line, records it, listens to it and records the next one until he has a whole verse. Now unless he spends extra time to memorize the whole verse together, and then record it, I'm sure he has no other option but to punch-in, because it's either that or writing it down, but sure the latter is "cheating".

Till I Collapse 3rd verse.

Criminal third verse as well, I think.

Eminem generally stacks his vocals, though, so in most instances he's not technically punching in. He'll go through once, hit most of it, then go through again and emphasize all words composing a multi, as well as doubling (or tripling) the majority of most of his lines.

That's just what you wanted to hear from me
Is that I fucked up ain't it?
That I can bust one take without lookin' at no paper
It doesn't take a bunch of takes
Or me to stand here in this booth all day
For me to say the truth, ok?

I'm just going to keep believing that he goes in there, does his verse and that's it.

Also Eedee stop acting like you're a professional rapper. WELL I HAVE TO USE PUNCH INS, WE ALL DO. Like you are up there with Eminem or something.

I always thought he punched in after the line

I think you mean after, "I'll probly never get the props I ever deserve."

In Criminal, it sounds like there's one after, "if I ever" (before "gave a fuck") in the 3rd verse.

Nah, I always thought it was like this:

That’s why I’m clever when I put together every verse
Punch in
My thoughts are sporadic, I act like I’m an addict

maybe because the rhyme scheme in the first part of the verse ends, and a new one starts, so it sounds all different, and also like a punch in

I wouldn't be surprised if he did this on his My Life verse.
