Was MMLP2 what you were expecting?

Funny, months ago maybe in June or July I was talking to bigray about how I think Em's next album is going to be more 'musical'. If you took into account his build up features, he just felt like he was engraved with the music again and wasn't just a voice on top of the beat, but rather a part of the beat itself. His hook and bridge on "Throw That" and his bridge on "Our House" were the biggest indicators to me that he was getting more melodic and musical again, so I'm so fucking happy he actually did.

Yeah but not only that...

Em has never... done something like "Rhyme or Reason".

He's always rapped over fairly simple (often thrilling and classic) dark rap beats... "Rhyme or Reason" is like... well it's a great use/flip of a sample but the musical backing is like... could exist by itself without Em's rap, as great music. He's never mixed it up with genres and music like this.

Which is why it's a shame if this is his last, because when you hear something like "Rhyme or Reason", it just makes you realize that he's only actually beginning to just tap in to that potential. There's so much he could do if he now truly fuxed with music in this way, he could create entire musical atmospheres and concepts which sound totally fresh.

I almost wish there was a consistent musical theme... like, if you listen to "Rhyme or Reason"... imagine that style was carried to the end. Not literally that exact style, I just mean like... similar samples and vibes and raps, imagine how much of an atmosphere that could create.

Yeah, and his rapping feels nostalgic and witty...

And given that the point of the album is nostalgia... if they had ran with that concept of like 60s samples throughout and made the whole album feel like RoR - in terms of, classy, funky... it would have made total sense and given you this 'old, classy, nostalgic' vibe...

And then it would have been totally consistent.

Because the original MMLP - it's like top to bottom similar tracks and the same character on every track; that kind of G-Funk thump remains... there's the odd exception like "Marshall Mathers" but his character remains. I kind of wish they'd have had that same ambition...

I don't want to make a whole album of being too uppity. You gotta try and find that right balance, and that's one of the things that the creative process was on this record as far as just experimenting. In other words, recording till I get it. And if I record 100 fucking songs and I don't have what I feel like I need yet to make the body of work, then I'm gonna keep going and keep recording.

I'm not obsessing... just very calmly adding to the discussion lol.

And I know he will never do that again, as I said, that's one of the things which I find annoying now. That he feels an album has to have a balance.

What i wanted is what i got. Great musical innovations and breaking the mould of "Eminem is not pushing the envelope sonically" Eminem is a rapper but hip-hop has expanded and all that. I used to hate that shit. It was literally the only "flaw" in his catalogue that hipsters liked to point out. Loved that they got sushed up by him being Retro, Current, Different AND GOOD all at the same time.

At the same time, it was not what i expected and its ticking me off a bit. There was alot of talk of Slim Shady and to me... i couldnt hear that character. It really did not feel like i sequel and since i started around Recovery, i had no "nostalgic" moments. There was no dark havoc beats that the black and white/ illuminati symbols implied. It just made the whole marketing of the album feel fake to me and i ddnt like that.

You started around 'Recovery', what do you mean?

You've been listening to Em since 'Recovery' you mean?

Yes. Recovery was the first Eminem album i listened from Start to finish. I used to hear his songs way back and remember knowing all the words to When I'm Gone but i ddnt follow him/ like him as a rapper much. Almost like anyone can casually follow J Cole.

Only after i listened to Recovery and loved it did i start going through the archives and listening to the Holy Trinity and all that.
