He's always been very melodic. It's a large factor in his success that people overlook, the fact he always made melodic, catchy music that irrespective of subject-matter or style, was infectious. His popularity in the mainstream has far more to do with that than most aspects.
Luis Resto even said "He's creative, he has symphonies in his head" about Em when he collected the Oscar on his behalf for "Lose Yourself". And Em's mother said he used to rock back and forth constantly as a child, and that he used to hum to himself in class not realizing people could hear.
