Any rapper that goes on as long as Em has and is as big as Em is will eventually be ousted by the 'hip-hop heads' and every word they say pin-pointed and called wack... it's happened to pretty much all the greats, as when someone gets too big people feel cooler not liking them than liking them.
If Em was underground now, 'heads' would be sucking his ballsack for half the shit he says. I agree a lot of his recent puns are corny but in terms of overall ability and skill... he still puts together some incredible stuff, and stuff a lot better than I see people quote from underground rappers and praise as pure genius. He's still a very unique voice, despite his flaws.
For me, he definitely should be aiming for a classic now... I mean, I think he and everybody should have that intent with every album, whether they achieve it or not, as aiming to 'just make music' for its sake or just put out content that's 'good enough' is, meh.
Em himself at one point in 2002 said that 'the day that it's not better, he doesn't want to make music anymore'. I wonder if he could truly say some of the content of his last two albums is better than the content of his first three. In terms of rap ability, like... flow for example, in some respects he does keep improving, and crafting layered, technically amazing flows and structures... but then in other ways he settles for mediocrity and doesn't have quite the same standard... or, artistic flair.
I do have a feeling that this next one will be a classic though, just going by what he's learned with his last two, the reactions (I wish he wouldn't take into account ANY reactions tbh, but, he does, so he may as well get better from them); and some of his recent raps - I'm thinking in particular of his awesome BET Cypher verse, and his "Richard" verse.
