not really, it's more like a personal classic for you.

I'd say that classic album = impact, influence, quality (album "considered" as a great album).

For example, Reasonable Doubt wasn't even considered as a 5/5 album in the 90's, critics & fans thought that it was just another good/great album but that same album started to influence other artists and it's now full of timeless songs.

people say the term classic gets thrown around but the reality is people just don't care about these things and are quick to declare an album classic because of the personal impact it had on them, thereby "personal classics"

I love kanye but I wasn't really interesting in that album so I really don't know if it had an impact or not. Pretty sure that a lot of artists talked about that album as a source of inspiration though

but I agree with you, The word "classic" gets thrown around a lot and the fans often give the "instant classic" status to a lot of critically acclaimed albums but... for better or worse, hiphop isn't the exact same culture as it was 15 years ago and public opinion is heavily driven by the media.

Imo, a critically album will often be labelled as an "instant classic" because the media will probably always talk about it and it will make it "timeless"

Guys, guys, guys ... If everybody had the same theories like you we would probably have around 500 classics in hip hop .. Of course .. to me, Em has 3 classics and even to the media, but if we really look at what classic means, he has only one .. For me a true classic is an album that moved the genre and took it to newer hights or gave it a newer sound .. therefor imo there are only around 10 real classics .. Illmatic, ready 2 die and 36 chambers for giving new york that griddy sound .. The Chronic and 2001 for influencing the east coast and the MMLP for introducing Hip-Hop to a new audience.
