The Evolution of Eminem (1996-2010) - The Slim Shady LP

Postby EminemBase » Feb 4th, '11, 18:49

So far I've done Infinite and The Slim Shady EP.

So naturally, next came The Slim Shady LP...

Excerpt...
He was also very adept at acute social commentary, in the form of situational mayhem and sarcasm. And, he was ahead of his time – talking about spraying an Aerosol can up at the ozone layer (Global Warming) and telling Saddam Hussein not to bother with making another bomb.

Don’t forget, this was early 1999. And whilst both Global Warming and Saddam were in the public consciousness, they certainly weren’t being talked about to the degree they were in the following few years, and for a dirt-broke kid from Detroit, it’s surprising how much he knew. Some people are only just NOW catching-up and realizing the full measure of Global Warming for example. And not too many lyricists were openly mocking or even mentioning one of the world’s most evil dictators. Something Em would spearhead again on “Without Me” in 2002, at Osama Bin Laden.

Good read

It's my favourite album of all time. Flawless. I look at it like this: MMLP may have been the reaction to his critics, this was the reaction to his life.

To add to the Role Model point:

Anyone else find it fantastic that he almost predicted the storm that would occur surrounding his lyrics - the deliberate irony in the chorus of Role Model is reminiscent of Bad Influence, yet RM was made a year or 2 before he was being derided for being a bad role model. Fantastic.

^ MMLP is a whole new level.

SSLP sparked it but MMLP was more calculated by definition. He took the reaction, thought about it and toyed with it to the nth degree.

And it's 'bigger' the ideas, themes and execution are all bigger, braver and bolder.

MMLP is far better than SSLP, IMO...SSLP is great though, but everything about the MMLP is darker, bigger, and better

Good read, though :y:

Came back to annihilate, the game's in dire straights, as I await
Word on Satan, as I drop, fall to my knees before this Quija board and I pray
Now I lay me down to sleep
I do this shit in my sleep, I’m sleepin' now, imagine if I awake

Great read as always, but I reacted to the excerpt, and especially the "it's surprising how much he knew" part. Knowing about Saddam Hussein? Lol. He wasn't just a random dictator somewhere far away. The US had been in war against him and his Iraq less than 10 years earlier. Who could possibly NOT know about Saddam Hussein?

And the specific ozone layer issue was much MORE in the public consciousness than it is today. It was talked about a lot - I remember it. It wasn't and isn't mainly connected to global warming, but sun damage to humans and other life on earth.
