As I get older, I like em less and less

Postby Common » Dec 8th, '12, 00:21

:(

His old stuff just kinda bores me now. I find a lot of it pretty corny. Anyone else feel this way? Songs like SFTM and Til I Collapse are still amazing, but a lot of his songs just seem boring/childish. Anyone else growing away from him? This isn't hate btw, he obviously wasn't trying to be mature. The content just bores me now. Shit like Illmatic and Ready to Die still sounds golden to me.

He's sooo childish now. Songs like Deja Vu... talking to a devil in your ear? Get over the imaginary friends Marshall. Cinderella Man? This guy's gone Disney SMFH!

He's talking about his prime. You should've read twice before posting lol.

My oldest brother feels the same way. He used to bump the hell out of his older work, but now he rarely even listens to TES.

He says he grew out of him.

I don't think you "grow out of" an artist's music. If you like it, you like it, and you pretty much always will. There's lots of old bands and albums I used to listen to that I don't anymore, but it's not 'cause I "grew out of them". It's because I just don't feel like listening to them. They're older albums, and I prefer newer stuff. I love TES, but I don't bump it very often.

They're older albums, and I prefer newer stuff. I love TES, but I don't bump it very often. I play Relapse and Recovery a lot more.

If you love an album, you're gonna play it lots. I think it's more likely that you're getting bored on the content / song that you've heard a billion times because of how much you like it. It's not that you dislike it now. It's like a classic video game or movie. You love them, and you'll play / watch the hell out of them because they're your favourites... but you'll set them down for awhile 'cause you're just not feeling them. One day when you go back to them though it'll hit you again. The feeling you had the first time.

Happens to me anyway.

I didn't say my brother doesn't like Eminem's older music anymore, it's just that it appealed to him more when he was younger.

He was around eight when MMLP dropped and you can only imagine how excited he must have been to hear Em's incredible raps. I actually remember the long nights of going to Best Buy or whatever just to buy TES and the deluxe edition of Encore. So of course he still likes the albums, and it's not that he's bored of them, they're just not appealing to him.

They're not worth picking up again and listening to. That was a thing of the past for him, staying up all night listening to Eminem. I know it's not only my brother who's going through this because my cousin (who's 26) also feels the same way. He also said that Em's music was cool when he was a teen, but he's moved onto more appealing rappers.

Not to say that Eminem isn't an appealing rapper, it just seems his target demographic is teens.

Nope, I like him more and more.

I thought I understood it all at 10, 11, 12 but in reality I realize many shades of his artistry and references and writing were sometimes above me. His lyricism and best work is very rich, he's the real thing. His work seems to get better with time for me. Ages like fine wine.

Amadeo wrote:I always roll my eyes when people claim they've grown out of Eminem's old music. They've matured, yo.

Almost every time, the person who says this is an immature idiot with shitty taste in music.

I know right, it's often pretty embarrassing too - I have a friend who totally dismisses Eminem and mocks me for liking him etc. when he used to be a huge fan as a kid and likes to pretend now Eminem is kids music. It's just people who want to feel grown up in some superficial sense lmao. And because they associated Eminem with their childhood think letting go of it makes them older...

It's just like 'ugh, stfu you pretentious retard', you don't even understand what you're now deeming you're too mature for lmao.

Or because they associate young kids liking him now so think it's corny.

When in reality, Eminem's music is adult music. Kids may like him but that's because he's rebellious and in the public eye, but his best work is for an adult's mind. By an adult. And he's actually very mature, most people don't know what that means and think because he makes silly noises or has a silly side he's immature. Eminem's themes and understanding = very mature, always have been. He's only ever 'immature' when being intentionally provocative, but that's intentional / character play.

You don't grow out of good art. That goes for anything. Even if you're reading well-regarded "children's books" or watching "kid's TV shows," the good ones invariably have adult appeal.

If it's good, it will appeal to any age group.

I also find it hilarious that music where black rappers are using punchlines is somehow considered "more mature" by rap fans than Eminem writing satirical songs.

Basically, if you think you "grew out" of Eminem's music, you never understood it to begin with. Your appreciation of his music was childish, not the music itself. You didn't understand it.

Yeah, Em's work is very mature, and I just love it more and more every day. I also bump all of his older shit all the time, just as much as I do his new shit.

Back when I got into him, I just loved his emotion and the way he sounded. Then as I got older, and I started getting more into his older stuff, I realized he wasn't just emotional but hilarious and a billion other things. Not until about a year or two ago did I start realizing how good he was with the actual art of rhyming and I started noticing the technical part of it and then all of his themes and shit.

Em's work is actually probably the most mature out of most rappers.
