Artists like k.dot influencing Eminem

Postby SliK » May 28th, '13, 04:16

For Eminem's 2010 album Recovery he went with poppy production and punchlines/puns.

With Kendrick Lamar and his style of rapping (story telling, concepts, rapid fire rhymes, intertwining rhyme schemes, etc.) fast becoming the new popular thing, will this influence Eminem's future work?

This album won't be a great judge, as I think it will be similar in style to the BET cypher, but it will be interesting to hear any freestyles or collabs after this album.

I'd like to see that raw style become popular again and see artists like Em and Jay return to their roots. Jay is too scared of having less #1 albums than Elvis and Eminem is too scared of mainstream criticism.

Imagine if the style of rapping that Eminem excelled at became popular again, or better yet... Eminem stopped "giving a fuck"... That'd be swell.

Kendrick doesn't have thousands of critics on his shoulders yapping at him, ordering him to make his album sound a certain way. I understand a lot of pressure was placed on Kendrick for his debut album but, he could have released an average album and still received a lot of praise.

I don't think Em's scared of the mainstream criticism, he's just trying too hard to beat other rappers in areas where they excel the most. The constant puns he's been throwing around is just him seeking attention, basically saying, "Hey, look at me! I'm Eminem, I can rap REALLY good AND throw some awesome puns in there!"

So, I guess what I'm trying to say here is that comparing Kendrick and Eminem was a bad idea considering Kendrick is fresh in the game and people are always looking for someone that sticks to their "roots." We have no idea if in a few years Kendrick will start compromising to maintain mainstream appeal.

Honestly, Em just ruined his entire image by saying "fuck Relapse" and all that stuff. It was his moment to reintroduce himself to the world but instead of reintroducing himself he reinvented his entire style and became this new, "nice Eminem."

I'm sure deep down he still does not give a fuck and could probably come out with an album full of material that he was feeling, but I believe it's entirely up to not whether the fans/critics will like it, but will it put him in the spotlight. He just comes off as a rapper that needs the attention, he doesn't want to be broadcasted as just "another rapper."

So...could Kendrick influence him? Definitely. I'm pretty sure they've been talking in the studio and probably recorded something together. But, I believe it's truly down to, "Will this material put me in the spotlight?"

I feel like I've gone sort of off-topic.

I feel like you started off topic then brought it back around. I wasn't really comparing them, I just meant if Kendrick's movement gets as big as Wayne's, the mainstream view of popular style might shift, as it did with Wayne.

I think you're right, that at this point, it would just be a coincidence as he would adopt whatever style is popular at the time. Hopefully that changes though. I think his upcoming album will be interesting.

One can only hope. What other artists do you see using Kendrick's style in the mainstream?

Em seems to have dropped the over-usage of puns in the recent tracks he's been on. He's never come off as a "sponge" to me, I'm just wondering why now he would decide to imitate other rapper's styles?

kendrick influenced some artists from the new gen to step their game and I noticed that a lot of them are trying too hard to be the new Kendrick, e.g. : Ace hood rapping with Kendrick's flow on The City, Chance's mixtape is like his own version of gkmc, YG wants to release "bad kid in a maad city", Pitchfork pointed out that Drake first single was influenced by Kendrick.

The real question is, will he influence the veterans ? I don't think so but I do agree that he proved that hip-hop doesn't have to go pop to be successful
The most acclaimed mainstream albums always influence some artists, e.g. mbdtf

Honestly, I noticed that Big K.R.I.T. is also influencing some underground rappers

Old artists might return to their roots but a lot of new comers tried to do what Kendrick did and they failed.

Kendrick's marketing strategy is also very different, he works with pop stars (guest verses) to promote an uncompromised album, it's clever but it will only work for him or already established artists tbh... I mean, everybody doesn't have the chance to work with Lady gaga, jay-z or Emeli Sandé.

At the end of the day, the promotion is very important and TDE is a serious label, they know how to promote their artists ! After a while you get to a point in hip-hop where certain tactics get watered down, look at Kanye West, the whole promotion is brilliant ! At this point, kanye can release whatever he wants, I'm pretty sure he is going to do solid sales numbers with his next album.

It's also very annoying to see these new cats trying to be the new Kanye West, lil Wayne, Kendrick or Eminem, they basically want to become whatever is popular.

2 months after gkmc, I swear god I could hear that kendrick flow and rhyme schemes in a lot of songs

i.e. : Ace Hood - Gangsta

I want something original from Em, even if it's a bit of a flop.
