He's always been socially awkward.
Anybody who thinks he wasn't isn't very good at reading people...
I used to be / can be a socially awkward person; very withdrawn, depressive... and he is that character-type. In his early years he was trying to make an impression and so he used zany OTT humour and pretty much lived his alter-ego to overcompensate for lack of actual confidence...
And anybody who knows how to see beneath the surface will totally see his awkwardness no matter what time period we're talking. All those early interviews where he tries to act confident... watch him in-between questions or off moments or the nervous laughs or confusion... that silly exterior was just a way to be somebody else / not face his own awkward self, I know because I used to do it.
And his died hair and new style of thinking with Shady probably solidified it more in his mind that he had license to act crazier, so it made him feel more at ease with being silly.
Now though, he's not coming back as some fresh face you know nothing about with a crazy alter-ego and some never before heard groundbreaking art; he's just himself. There's no died hair or living his silly side as he knows the public know him, he's also older and he's just being himself. He hasn't BECOME socially awkward, he's always been that, and shy, the silliness is just an easy way to overcompensate and try and hide that. He just doesn't hide himself any more which ironically and contrary to how he looks and talks - actually makes him MORE confident.
Eminem is MORE confident now than he was in 1999. In 1999-01 he didn't have the confidence to be himself, to talk like himself or do an interview or have a moment of real thought or contemplation; he constantly play acted as it's a form of masking low self-esteem. Now, he's unafraid to show you what he's naturally like, unafraid to have natural reactions and thoughts, he's NOTTT AFRRAID...
It's almost like a delayed adolescence lmao.
When he first returned, he was trying to convince himself he was the goofy clown (awkward forced silliness in 09 interviews,
aside from the Elvis shit which is fucking hilarious), perhaps he felt pressure to be that and maybe due to the fact he was trying to create his old artistry he felt inclined to be that... but that's not really him. Hence why he's not constantly doing voices and being stupid all the time now - real him is relaxed, thoughtful, smart, laid-back...
The most 'real' interview available, is his interview with a guy on NPR radio. If you go seek that out, you will hear some of the most naturally real Eminem thoughts ever, and you can tell he's extremely intelligent, just in the way he phrases things and is also totally on a level with the rather intelligent interviewer, which is probably why he's himself there. As, also like me, Em grew up intelligent but surrounded by idiots, so he developed a goofy exterior to use as a shell to fit in; as he was always afraid (HE WASSS AFRAAID) to show his real intelligent self in front of his dumb goofy macho friends most likely. Which is why his only other response when not comfortable is: withdrawn.
In that interview on NPR, he's talking to a real adult, somebody having an adult conversation with him, and so he's comfortable and lets his guard down. All those zany interviews back in the day he was nervous and afraid to show himself, so he play acted.
