most/least controversial Em albums

Postby ladelsofgravy » Aug 30th, '13, 06:37

I think there two different ways to look at it.

MMLP was the most controversial.
Encore was the most tame.
Relapse had lots of racy lyrics, but the mainstream ignored the album, so it never made news.
SSLP had less inappropriate content than Relapse, but it was his debut so it caught people by surprise more.
TES was slightly on the controversial side and Recovery was slightly on the safer side.

Recovery I'd say was easily his least controversial album.. got a lot of attention but still he didn't cause much of an uproar, didn't go after celebrities, didn't mention other rappers besides the fact that he would've been outdone by Lil Wayne and Kanye if he went at them in his drugged out state.... and in terms of most controversial, I'd call MMLP and SSLP equally controversial in terms of bringing up topics pretty much unspoken about in hip hop, but I'd give SSLP the edge being that it was his debut to the mainstream of America. Although, the Eminem Show touched on political issues and also included a lot of songs that previously would probably have been considered very controversial.. so his most controversial is probably a very tough call.

MMLP most controversial, i did enjoy the jabs at American politics in TES though not sure how controversial it was.

Funnily enough although Encore sucked, I wouldn't say it was Tame in terms of controversy because of two of 2 singles from his album. Many people got severely butt hurt about "Just Lose It" as he took shots at MJ and then you had Mosh was an anti Bush song released as a single 2 weeks before the U.S Election.

Yeah I remember everyone coming out of the woodworks to have there say on Em making fun of MJ, like Stevie Wonder and even MJ himself. So celebrity wise I would say Encore was very controversial.

MMLP obviously pissed off a lot of people, gay rights groups mainly. Relapse wasn't really shocking.....it was detailed and gruesome etc but not specfically about anyone for the most part. I don't even remember hearing anything about Britney/Lindsay's responses to Same Song and Dance.

IMO:

SSLP-Because people hadn't heard anything like it before
MMLP- Because it was SSLP on steroids and taking shots at everything
TES- The political songs and the whole 'White America' talk and censorship
Encore- MJ stuff mainly and Mosh
Relapse- This is where it had fizzled out really not much controversy
Recovery- None really, wasn't attempting to either

So I think he has pretty much gotten less controversial as time goes on but MMLP was the most controversial but SSLP had even more shock value I think. I don't remember the time around SSLP release as I was 8 or something but from MMLP onwards I remember a lot of drama.

The Michael Jackson thing was more of a controversy than anything on Relapse. Mosh wasn't that controversial, because Bush wasn't really well liked (at least by most people who pay attention to the media and music).

When I say Encore was less controversial than Recovery, I mean relatively.

Recovery did have the whole suicide scene in Spacebound, which caused a little stir.

But Encore was preceded by his three most controversial albums. So, Encore seemed much more tame compared to them than Recovery did to Relapse.

The least controversial is definitely Recovery. It got a lot a talk but because of the features and it was just more acceptable but the public in general.. even my friends were listening to Em :sweating:

MMLP was by far the most controversial. His homophobic views pissed off a lot of people. Then Encore caused a lot of attention with the MJ thing and the White House threatening to take action on Em because of the whole dead presidents line.

Recovery was the least controversial, obviously.

Don't forget SSLP, maybe the second most controversial album after MMLP... 97 Bonnie and Clyde is one of his most brutal songs, rapping about killing his wife and making his 3 year old daughter help him to get rid of the body...
...as the world turns and I keep growing older
I'll be living this hip hop till hell freezes over...

Most is MMLP
Least is Recovery
Fuck top five, bitch, I'm top four
And that includes Biggie and Pac, whore
And I got an Evil Twin
So who the fuck do you think that third and that fourth spot's for?

Relapse is the least controversial imo.

No matter what you Relapse Stans on this website say about it, no one batted an eyebrow to the over-the-top offense-ridden Relapse. No one cared.

At least on Recovery he had a popular song about domestic abuse where he kills the girl at the end with an accompanying music video to stir up some buzz.

Whereas you didn't hear anyone complaining about Em jacking off to Hannah Montana and stalking/murdering random women. It flew right over.

And the sad part is, he tried his absolute best to be offensive and upsetting on Relapse.

Yep. Out of sight, out of mind.

Relapse was his 2nd most controversial album in content, but since the mainstream (outside of Beautiful) ignored it it had the least impact of all his albums.
