Was MMLP2 what you were expecting?

Postby Kill You » Nov 2nd, '13, 13:20

It wasn't what I expected at all. I'm sure we all thought Bad Guy was gonna be a song like Kill You and ended up being Stan Pt 2. I was completely taken aback by this album, and in this case it was a good thing because I remembered how epic and big the album sounded. Like a musical detailing the man that is Marshall Mathers, Eminem, and Slim Shady all in one and on this album he finally admits they are the same. He hit us with strange joints like Headlights, Stronger Than I Was, and the experimental but incredibly enjoyable So Far...

This album is nuts and I'm glad that he did it this was because I was secretly fearing "Recovery 2" as well. Despite my optimism in the days leading to the album, in the back of my mind there was always "what if I was wrong?"

And I'm glad I wasn't.

Your optimism was actually what made me optimistic too tbh. And in the back of my mind I was also like "What if he was wrong ?" lmao Glad you weren't. :y:

I was pessimistic. Survival and The Monster really made me think we were gonna get Recovery 2. Although when I heard the album for the first time, so I knew I was wrong and this really put me in a happy state. And it made me sure that Em really doesn't give a fuck about collaborations. Em's albums songs will always be bombs! :worship:

Once again, sorry Marshall that I didn't believe in you. The album is really a misterpiece and thanks for that, Slim. :worship: :worship:

Yes, I knew not to quickly dismiss the album because of 3 songs, I learnt that lesson when I heard Relapse.
Fuck top five, bitch, I'm top four
And that includes Biggie and Pac, whore
And I got an Evil Twin
So who the fuck do you think that third and that fourth spot's for?

The album is a complete shock to me.

It's current Em's equivalent of MBDTF. And I think he can do better with the right guidance.

I don't want to go into another Kanye/Em ramble, but Kanye works with so many artists who only improve his work.
Em has once again put himself on a plateau where he has access to that and more. Not only that, but the artistic direction he has taken on this album has once again cemented his GOAT status whilst expanding his recognition in this role. He's not just a Rap God: he's pierced that glass ceiling that Kanye was able to breach so easily with his early work.

Before this album, current Em was never perceived as an experimental artist, but on this album he has just proven that when you step out of your grounded comfort zone you can enter a whole new zone of wonder.

I'm not sure who Em will top this though. Whilst I know he can do better, I think it would be completely different though as this album ties up so many loose ends. Yeezus season approaching?

I didn't expect so many gems on there. I didn't expect Monster fitting into the album. Survival has no place in there tbh.

Just replaced Beautiful Pain with Survival and it fits perfectly inbetween So Much Better and Legacy :flutter:

No. I didn't expect to laugh out loud at some lines, nor did I expect his writing to be that great.

No.

If I'm honest - I'm a little disappointed by the piecemeal approach again, and the fact he didn't really tackle many societal themes (just the odd mention to make the albums feel alike), but I suppose this was to recapture that 'live, free-mind' spirit, which in spots it did.

My biggest surprise was how musically innovative the album feels; I mean the production, the use of samples and the quality of the music throughout... production was one of my biggest fears after Recovery, as I'm sure it was for many.

I'm surprised there's been almost no discussion about the creative musical aspects of MMLP2 though, even though I know the focus is always on Em's lyrics... considering Ye gets his ass licked by critics and fans for his use of samples and mixing-up genres and his production... I was actually more intrigued, surprised and initially wow'd by the music of MMLP2 than I was of any Kanye album.

Even Dark Fantasy didn't make me like 'woow, wtf' @ the musical aspects and surprises as I was listening... I just sort of went 'cool. Nice', but my first listen of MMLP2 felt like an acid trip, it felt really huge and sucked me in, I couldn't stop focusing on the musical ride initially.

On yeah, musically it's awesome. I love the production it's very good. I grew up with rock music so it's like Eminem fused rap with rock in a new way other than what he did on TES.
