It's almost as if...

Postby EminemBase » Nov 2nd, '13, 17:07

Each track of MMLP2 could be from a separate album.

I kind of think the album feels cohesive / great track placement...

But when you listen to the style of "Rhyme or Reason"... then "Berzerk"... then "Rap God"...

You could create a family of tracks in each of those styles and they would be fantastic albums and perhaps better than what we got due to how coherent they would feel.

Imagine an album using 60s samples with that kind of super cool funk of "Rhyme or Reason", with Em rapping in that style about consistent themes...

Or imagine tracks and raps in the style of "Rap God" with the album feeling like one big trance and barrage of neurotic and abrasive lyrics coming at you from every angle.

Kind of feels like Em copped out a little bit in not quite knowing which style to go with, so he just decided to take a bit of everything and put it together.

This album has track pairings.

Think about it.

Well that's what's so great about this album in the first place is the variety. But it all still sounds cohesive.

I wouldn't want to hear an entire album of rap gods, rhyme or or reasons, or berzerks. I don't think he copped out, he went and did exactly what he wanted to do, created a well balanced yet like you said cohesive album.

... Actually though nvm I take that back, I would absolutely love a retro style album. I think he nailed every one of those tracks. Berzerk, Rhyme or Reason, Love Game, and So Far all sound amazing.

Not if they sound the same.

If they have a consistent sound. Big difference.

All MMLP tracks have a consistent sound...

But does "Kill You" sound the same as "Who Knew"?

The tracks are distinctly different, but you can tell they are related; they feel of the same world; this is the point of an ALBUM - a family of related tracks.

Where as "Rap God" and "The Monster" may as well be by different artists. On the same album.

I don't agree. The album flows together great. The different things going on makes it brilliant.

I will say I think there are certain parts of individual songs that would make great full songs.

I got a laptop in my back pocket
My pen'll go off when I half-cock it
Got a fat knot from that rap profit
Made a living and a killing off it

Enough rhymes to
Maybe to try to help get some people through tough times
But I gotta keep a few punchlines
Just in case cause even you unsigned
Rappers are hungry looking at me like it's lunchtime
I know there was a time where once I
Was king of the underground
But I still rap like I'm on my Pharoahe Monch grind
So I crunch rhymes
But sometimes when you combine
Appeal with the skin color of mine
You get too big and here it comes trying to
Censor you like that one line I said
On "I'm Back" from the Mathers LP
One where I tried to say I take seven kids from Columbine
Put 'em all in a line
Add an AK-47, a revolver and a nine

I'd love to get a full song (three verses) that sounded like all that.
It's the body bag game bitch I'm supplying coffins

As much as i want to defend him, i feel like he did cop out. But i feel he coped out by not being more schizophrenic. More impulsive. More daring. More diversity on the album. The Monster for example, that song sounds so safe. They should have had more sonic layers to that.

What he did is rip out the "model" or "format" of a "cohesive" album and i love it. That is pushing creativity. In the same way he did not stick to strict 16's, pursued singing, used retro sounds he created a new metric of what "cohesive" is and i love it. But sometimes he makes safe choices sonically "as long as i can write as an emcee" and on that its not defensible.

Right...

'complaining', not normal healthy and real (positive and negative) discussion?

I forgot this forum is full of children who can't have sensible discussions on Em's work.

There are people on here who absolutely can't imagine a negative opinion about Eminem.. As if he is perfect even though the consensus is clearly otherwise.

The album doesn't feel exactly cohesive to me. The singles stand out as out of place for me except, surprisingly, The Monster(I still don't think its a good song) but it meets the theme he attempted with the album.

I dunno.. I think it could of been better but I am not complaining with what I got. I enjoy most of it.
