Funny People came out in July 2009, it was probably filmed early-mid 2008.

I've never watched the movie, but when I have seen the scene in the past I assumed it was during the bad times like 2005-2007

Funny People was probably filmed in 2008.
Look at the premier of the "Way I Am" book, he looks the same as he did in funny people. A little chub, dark hair.
