Album Review: Eminem “Relapse”
Eminem the serial killing drug inducing rapper is back.
Eminem’s first album “Relapse” after a five year disappearance from the music scene, has the international rap superstar singing “My mom loved valium and lots of drugs and that's why I am like I am cause I'm like her.”
The album opens up with a skit titled “Dr. West” with Eminem talking to Mr. West at the drug rehabilitation facility. It leads to Eminem’s second hit single “3am” where he escapes the rehabilitation facility which quickly becomes a “horror corridor” where he murders several victims, consumes pills, and masturbates to “Hannah Montana”.
Eminem continues his psychopathic rhymes as he did with his previous albums which include his dreadful life at the trailer-park on eight mile road, murder, parodies, and comic book heroes.
On “Relapse” he retells his life as a child where he raps about his mother forcing him to eat Zantac with his lunch and his stepfather raping him. Then there’s the bashing of celebrities which he attacks such as Mariah Carey, Ellen DeGeneres, Nick Cannon, Heath Ledger, etc.
"Relapse" is unlike any other Eminem album because in this album Eminem is fully sober after being addicted to pills for many years.
As much as a pill popping and murdering album it seems to be Eminem does offer two tracks one called "Beautiful" which is on the more emotional level. Then toward the end of an album he offers one more track which is called "Crack a Bottle" which is more of a party level song which recently broke a digital sales record selling more than 418,000 copies online in its first week.
On "Relapse" Eminem shows his lyrical ability unlike in "Encore" which lacked it due to his poor flows.
The production is outstanding where both Eminem and hip hop legend Dr. Dre provide the best possible beats for Eminem's comeback. The storyline fits in great as well where it jumps in from rehab to finally getting away from it and having fun.
"Relapse" displays the craziness and creativity as well as displaying the more human side to Slim Shady by letting his fans look into his addiction.
Some of the songs are disturbing such as "Same Song and Dance", "Insane", and "Stay Wide Awake." Eminem is still rapping about serial killers and drugs which is no longer as much of a shock factor as it once was when he did it with his previous albums.
The album lacks replay value in the sense that he has a lot of one liners and once you hear them once they won't be hysterical as the first time.
Eminem created an album for his hardcore fans which had been waiting for it for more than five years after his critically acclaimed album "Encore". With his lyrical capabilities and his close to perfect production by Dr. Dre his new album "Relapse" might get a lot of new rappers to quit writing rhymes.
