South African nerd rapper Jean Grae returns today with “Kill Screen.” An homage to Donkey Kong, the track features arcade samples and references to documentary The King of Kong.

Grae tells MTV that she intended the self-produced track as “something eerie [and] sparse that allowed for a lot of room for wordplay; a lot of room to breathe on the track. I look at beats like a canvas: Sometimes you want a lush, full landscaped background, other times it deserves to be something more minimalistic. I wanted to paint on a minimal canvas.”

While Grae hasn’t released a full-length since 2008’s The Evil Jeanius, she has two — Cake or Death and Gotham Down — on the way. Listen to the stirring “Kill Screen” below.
