I've listened to Good Kid Maad City a 2nd and 3rd time

At first, I thought it was just a really good album, maybe a solid 8,5/10. I never rate an album after the first listen but I avoided it for months because stans pissed me off.
I didn't understand the hype at all, fans loved it, critics loved it and this racoon face even received the rare XXL rating. I must say that critics made me relisten to GKMC and it's when the album's genius hit me.

It’s one of the most understated albums I have ever listened to in my life. Kendrick’s low and mumbling flow is usually backed by smooth and dub-heavy beats but you have to give the album your full attention and not doing something else while listening to it. It’s a fucking movie, his music is art and literally paints pictures

I can't compare Good Kid Maad City to anything else in rap music. The overall experience is so full that you have to reach outside of music to find something similar to compare it to.
The best part of this album is maybe its complexity, as far as the production, narrative and structure go, GKMC is much more complex for a debut than anything we’ve heard in years and Kendrick's flows and tones compliment the beats perfectly. This guy is an instrument

All the songs have something to do with the large story he’s telling and they all flow into each other well. When Compton leaked, I thought it was just a good or solid song but in fact, it's a great outro. Compton was always that 'curtains drawn', credits rolling, people walking out the theatre in a good mood, 'picking popcorn out of their teeth' record.

My verdict ? Snoop, Eminem, 50 Cent, Game and now Kendrick, Dr Dre still got it.
This album is absolutely fantastic but let's stop the fucking painful comparison with Illmatic (!!!!). Kendrick is now playing in the big leagues and I truly believe that this album will have a major influence in general because people are changing their perspective on what sells but to make this comparison is to forget that Illmatic influenced hip hop as a whole.
With that said, I see good kid maad city as a step in the right direction for hip-hop, the album will certainly become a classic in a few years but Illmatic and this album are doing very different things in different ways.

I definitely agree, it's very cohesive and it was mixed to death by Ali and Dr Dre, every time I listen to it, I get somethng new from the story

I have been waiting for an artist like him for years
but his next album better be as great as gkmc or I'm afraid he'll be forgotten.
