Is mic presence important?

Postby dR3 » Apr 9th, '13, 15:55

For me it's one of the most important aspects in a rapper's arsenal, if not the most important. I simply can't listen to someone who can't use their delivery to express the emotions the track itself portrays in the right way.

I'll take Andre 3k for example. His charisma and presence make him really enjoyable to listen to, even if the beat that he's spitting to is simple and provides close to zero musical experience and enjoyment.

This was just a thought I had earlier today so I figured I'd post here. It would be nice to read your opinions. Peace.

Of course that's important. For instance, that's why I can't listen to Drake. He sounds the same on every track to me.

Of course. You need to show people that you mean what you say, so if you sound monotone, who's gonna buy it? At the same time, you need to be careful on overdoing it. You should almost have an idea on when to kinda raise or lower your voice when rapping in terms of delivery. Takes practice but it's needed.

Definitely. If you don't have good mic presence, people won't want to listen. Simple as.
