Dr. Dre = a glorified DJ Khaled

Postby FreeSpeech » Jun 4th, '12, 20:08

I love Dre, I love his albums, and he's an amazing rapper (I don't care if he writes it, sounds good).

But on the real, what does he do?

Most of his famous beats are obvious samples someone else found and Dre just put drums over.

Dre didn't find Em, Jimmy Iovine did and sent Dre his SSEP tape. Jimmy just wanted Dre to cosign Em to give him cred and publicity.

Dre doesn't write his own raps and his albums are like 60% features with ghost production.

Shit, Dre only produced THREE songs on the Slim Shady LP. It was all Bass Brothers.

The production is him though, listen to the 2nd N.W.A. album Niggaz4life for example. Theres no way hes got ghost production on there and it still sounds exactly like the Chronic, though a bit cluttered at points. The vast majority of Dre beats do not use samples/are not sample based when it comes to his 2000's works (90s it was pretty much all parliament beat, and I doubt someone else was showing him these), he is also the one responsible for people wanting to use live instruments for their beats instead of samples. You say theres ghost production but I really doubt most of it considering that there are already other producers listed in the credits and when you listen to the solo work of the other producers you can tell Dre is guy in charge.

So ya, Dre ruled over the 90s with a signature sound that almost every producer tried to copy and then did the exact same thing in the early 2000s with a new signature sound. So what if he only produced 3 songs on the SSLP, I dont remember people giving him credit for those beats or giving those beats any credit.

Comparing Dre to Khaled is just dumb. Khaled is nowhere near Dre, fuck that shit.

I don't think it's fair to say Dre just took samples and layed drums over them. Songs like "Let Me Ride" and "Fuck With Dre Day" have a lot more going on than a simple loop and some kicks and snares. Dre pioneered the West-coast sound with those synth basses and the "west-coast whistle" over samples. He changed the game and influenced some of the greatest producers today, like Kanye. Then there's the original beats he has produced like Outta Control, Bitch Please, In Da Club, Forgot About Dre, Role Model etc. I'd add "Still Dre" to that but in all fairness it was Scott Storch who came up with the string chord progression that it's best known for.

I do think however that Dre's best days are behind him. I can't remember the last stand-out Dre production... maybe Obie's "The Setup". Even the songs that were supposed to be singles for Detox (Kush, INAD, Die Hard) weren't produced by Dre. And the fact that Detox still hasn't been released says an awful lot.

In regards to writing his lyrics, I mean yeah it can be obvious in a negative way sometimes that he doesn't write his own shit. He nearly ruined The Recipe for me cuz he sounded so wack and a little awkward rapping those verses in comparison to Kendrick who was so much smoother.

About Jimmy wanting to sign Em.
If I remember it right. Jimmy got the tape from some lowrank guy at interscope. Jimmy heard it was good, but thought the fact that Em was white would be a problem. Dre was the one who said, "Fuck it, get him!"

@FreeSpeech I appreciate your contribution to the forum, the HipHop section is pretty boring most of the time :y:

On topic: I see your point, but

Most of his famous beats are obvious samples someone else found and Dre just put drums over.

This is not true. I know some of his beats that simply copy the melody, and "just put drums over" (still awesome beats tho, Kill You being my favorite, GREAT SAMPLE), but a lot of his beats are his own ideas or ideas of his production team.

I read somewhere that TOP producers (Kanye too) have a production team, and they just come to the meeting, tell them what they would like to create and the put it together.

I'd have to majorly disagree. If anything I'd say DJ Khaled is a dumb downed mediocre Dr. dre. First off he doesn't even produce his "songs" he is just a guy who gets major artists together on a beat. That's literally all he actually contributes musically. Besides the screaming. And as far as the sampling issue, everyone pretty much said it. Yes he samples but a majority of his beats are composed. Nice topic though :y:

Thats the most ignorant statement I've heard anybody ever say.

Dre works similar to Kanye West although in completely different styles, What Dre as a producer does is envision a workspace and arranges stuff as he goes, he doesnt have his "perfectionist" title for nothing, He handles each piece of the entire 30+ tracks multitrack, and edit each sound differently, while also composing and understanding the music theory related to each sample, weather he is tweaking and chopping the original or re-creating parts of it. Its absurdly difficult to have the clarity and quality that Dr.Dre puts into his beats. Not to mention that those drums "he just puts over" have been entirely created by him, weather from scratch from a synthesizer or from an existing sample, a drum just doesnt go over the beat on time and thats all... thats how you amateur FL studio producers do, and thats why only few can compare themselves to him. Not to mention that he has single handedly created styles that have defined eras of hip hop.
