Most of the time it is, but there are special cases were it doesn't (This applies if you disregard the pop genre other wise I'd agree).

NO. The special cases are when someone with talent gets popular.

Okay, so you would say Lupe Fiasco, Jay-Z, Eminem, Kanye West, 2Pac, Biggie Smalls, J Cole, Nas, Rakim, Wu-Tang, Frank Ocean, Hopsin, Kendrick Lamar, Big K.R.I.T., Joe Budden, etc... arn't talented?

Edit: We all know there are sellouts but talent takes you a far way in achieving success. Making music that is original and isn't cookie cutter shit is a talent, and some of the most popular musicians have that ability.

No, but I came name way more people with no talent that are also popular.

I could also name a bunch of people in the underground that are shit, probably more than you can name in the mainstream. There is a reason why the underground is infinitely larger than the mainstream.

Edit: And I'm not saying underground sucks in general. There are good acts in the underground, but come on, to say this is shit is stupid IMO unless you give a good reason.

Well no duh, any shithead that decides he wants to make a song is considered underground. But the upper tier of the underground has way more talent than 99% of the mainstream

Check my edit. Anyway, if you hate the song... It's not for you, that's fine. But to say it's shit it retarded beyond belief. And Ab-Soul isn't mainstream either, I consider him that upper tier you just mentioned.

I wasn't referring to you. I was referring to the person I quoted saying it (earlier in the thread).

Word it's like having mainstream appeal which isn't an inherent good thing, or getting luck with word of mouth.

The Internet is a great place to spread your music and it's not as hard as it used to be to get popular or at least known, just saying. If people like you enough, they tell their friends and they post your shit on blogs while you promote yourself, it's a fast way to spread the word around. Social media also takes it a step further by allowing your fans instant access too you and updated statuses on your work. It's not to far fetched to say that more talented artist are being recognized more than ever before due to the Internet. Thus, achieving popularity is infinitely easier through "word of mouth."

When there's hundreds of thousands of other artists competing for the limelight this doesn't really matter, it's luck more than anything. You're almost arguing that popularity is indicative of quality which is a huge no.

On the Internet their are a lot of new people looking for the best sounding music, and that's what makes some stand out more than others. Sure, that may not give you any impact in the mainstream, but there's a better chance of breaking of the underground than ever before. All you got to do is upload your music and get to the people on the blogs unlike back in the 90's where you had to make CD's and pass them around. You have more people competing but there is always someone who will listen to you.
