Jay Z is known for his inconstancy
Reasonable Doubt- Classic
Vol. 1- Good
Vol. 2- Great
Vol. 3- Bad
Dynasty- not really a solo, so I'm not gonna rate it as one
Blueprint- Classic
Blueprint 2- Bad
Black Album- classic
Kingdom Come- Bad
American Gangster- near classic
Blueprint 3- decent

How is that consistant?

Guys, lets work hard not to turn this thread with potential into some fucking cyber bitchfight between you-know-who & you-know-who. :y:

Most consistent?
If Jay stopped at the Black Album I believe he would've been in the runnings. Em I believe still has a slight chance. But I think I've got to hand it to either Yeezy or Nas.
Am I an idiot for wanting to nominate Ghostface? Are we talking content or sales performance? Or both?

Jay's the most inconsistent rapper ever.
Fuck top five, bitch, I'm top four
And that includes Biggie and Pac, whore
And I got an Evil Twin
So who the fuck do you think that third and that fourth spot's for?

Consistency belongs with "vocab" and "metaphors" in the list of stupid criteria internet fans use to evaluate the talent of rappers.

How are metaphors a stupid criteria to evaluate rappers

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's the fact a lot of people will say "rapper x uses awesome metaphors" or "this line is a dope metaphor" and it will often be a punchline, lol.

There aren't actually that many metaphors in rap music.

Although, well-executed metaphors should definitely be considered to evaluate rappers.

Metaphors are just comparing two things without using like or as. They don't have to be punchlines, they're useful when it comes to imagery and conveying emotion. Rappers use metaphors a lot, at least the rappers I listen to.

Yeah, I agree. But people get confused and think puns/punchlines are metaphors. Start a "Best Metaphors thread" and it'll be obvious.

And I was about to edit in that rappers like Slug do use a lot of great metaphors. But in the majority of rap music, there isn't an awful lot.

I really don't get why people don't get mad at Jay-Z. Wayne, and every other shitty rapper raps about money, jewels and cars. Jay does the exact thing but mentions Forbes or something and he just gets a pass. Just interesting, I like the Shawn, but I never saw him as the greatest ever or even top ten.

I don't think Jay-Z is the greatest, nor do I like him, but he raps about more than just money, jewels, and cars; at least he did before.

And that's a copout anyway. Just because you rap about money and cars, doesn't make you a bad rapper. It depends in what context.
