Technical
Technical, for a lot of fans, is the structure of the rap and how it sounds. It includes stuff like rhyme scheme, multies, assonance, consonance, alliteration, voice, etc. It’s anything that helps the verse sounds or flows better. A good technical rapper is someone who can flow well and not be predictable doing it. An example of good technique would be Blu in the song “Cold Hearted”:

I was cold hearted and young, a dumb kid with a gun
Cause fun days don’t last, the last nigga to laugh
So rap fell on my tongue, numb feelings remain
And pain comes and it goes
But my wounds shows the room where my pops beat my moms
Moms screamin' for help, myself hot as a sun
Cold hearted and young, a dumb kid with a gun
That I got from my pops top drawer
When he left my momma twice in a week
My momma lifeless and weak, spendin' her nights in the sheets
With seed killer number (one)
Seed killer number (two)
Seed killer number (three)

For example; Tech N9ne and Hopsin are technical rappers.

Lyrical
Lyricism is how the rapper expresses his theme, message, or emotions. Creativity is important in lyricism. Similes, metaphors, entendres, word play, punchlines, etc, all help make a verse more creative or original, but they aren’t totally necessary. You can be lyrical by having original thoughts or ideas, or being deeply introspective. I think lyricism is the more subjective of the two, because people see things differently just based off of their personal experiences or personality. An artist that displays great lyricism, in my opinion, is Common in the song “The Believer”, Nas or Kendrick Lamar.

Can you be technical and not lyrical?
It depends. Most of the time, there might be something in a song that someone considers lyrical. It’s hard to judge. This is where the subjectivity comes in again. For me, a lot of boastful raps aren’t very lyrical, but can be very technical so I’d say yes, but I’m sure someone disagrees

Can you be lyrical but not technical?
Yes. 2Pac is probably the best example of this. A lot of the stuff he said about his life and society just really inspired or entertained people. And he was mostly original in the way he did it. But he lacked technical skill for the most part. He had repetitive rhyme schemes, simple rhymes, and a predictable flow

There’s differences in opinion on this site about what makes a song good. Some would say lyrical skill is more important, some say technical, and some say both.

I think it comes from rapgenious :-k

But it is. Just listen to Yonkers, that shit is unbearable. It honestly sounds bad. Hopsin is a better producer than Tyler, both can make beats that fit their style, but Hopsin's sound better. Well, that IS objective in a sense but I think a lot of people don't like Tyler's beats.

Tyler sounds better on other people's beats, like Martians vs Goblin/Trouble on My Mind. Hopsin's beats are often too simple, but we haven't heard anything new from him except for that basement video who gave me some hope.

And he'll get better. The beats on the basement video are better than most of Tyler's beats. And Hopsin is one of the best hook makers, no joke.
So I don't really agree with EmBase saying Tyler is the better artist because Hopsin can add that little replay value thing in his verses, like in Am I a Psycho where he starts semi singing near the end of his verse.

I find Tyler's song often repetitive.

I like this thread because no one is actually insulting each other. Keep going guys. Debates are cool.

I have listened to Yonkers and I found the beat fine. I had no problem with it. I've listened to Bastard, Goblin, She, Tron Cat, and all those beats were fine. Of course it's subjective, if no one liked Tyler's beats then why does he have so many loyal fans? His beats are different. They all carry a dark undertone - Tyler's signature. The reason his production might sound the same to you is because he wants to carry a consistent theme. He's a "dark" artist. Those beats fit his lyrics.

To be honest, Tyler and Hopsin are nearly identical on the outside. They're both goofy and like to say/do dumb shit. On the inside, they're two completely different artists. Hopsin preaches about Christianity. Tyler does the exact opposite. I have no clue why these two rappers were even put up against each other in the first place.

Downloaded Tylers albums after I heard Yonkers.

The worst beats / songs I have ever heard.

Hopsin is clearly better in almost every way.

Tyler's beats aren't terrible, they're just simplistic.

Like if Bastard was sampled by a great producer and reworked, it could've been an amazing beat.

Maybe music can take us to a place so atmospheric

I'm a huge fan of both. Hopsin's obviously a better rapper. Tyler's a better artist overall tho. Bastard and Goblin are both great and flow so great. We'll just have to wait til Knocks Madness comes out...in 2050

Edit: I like Tyler more as a producer btw

Yonkers is a great beat, but I mean it is kind of on and off when it comes to making his beats as a whole. Bastard had great production, but Goblin...not so much. When you hear some of the stuff on Goblin, it sounds very generic and easy to make.

I'll agree with this. I like some songs on Goblin but a lot of his production on it is pretty wack and makes the songs sound like shit. I also think he RUINED Transylvania with that voice change. Bastard was a great album, better than any Hopsin album for sure. I hope Wolf isn't disappointing.

Hopsin. Always felt he rhymed about more important topics, Tyler was boring and stupid to me.

I definitely agree. I'll always prefer Hopsin over him though. I'll check Bastard again, I was younger when it dropped and I couldn't appreciate it fully.
