I think everyone has had some bad punchlines from time to time, I don't think the people I mentioned use them consistently though. And I'm not trying to make it seem like Jay is perfect, I strongly disagree with Jay-Z being consistent like the OP says unless he means consistently selling a lot or something lol.

After only reading the OP my response is that I strongly disagree with the consistency point, and that has always been my reason for not rating him near #1. The albums below are far from OK, let alone good.. If your listening to any of these from start to finish it will be a pretty painful listen usually with only 1 or 2, maybe 3 high points over the course of more than an hour. Volume 1 almost made the shit list too because of some gross lapses of taste (I know What Girls Like) but I left it off because in that case there's a bunch of good songs with a couple of Shit Caesars laying in wait. The rest of the list is a couple of diamonds hidden in the dookies or in the case of Blueprint 2, so damn lame.... so much forgettable filler that isnt really unlistenable, but still...

If you actually enjoy these albums that changes things.

Not to mention the various business ventures he's a part of. He's not a businessman, he's a business...man!

Talking about the popularity, just imagine Eminem doing what Jay is doing. Marrying Beyonce, having a baby with her, working with everybody... He would be bigger than the world. You said that Em and Jay are tied on this, but you are forgetting that Em is doing nothing on that matter. He doesn`t do tours, he is hiding from the world. And still, he is one of the biggest stars.

Without even addressing the rest or giving my opinion on the statement itself right now; there is no way Jay's popularity is 'tied' with Em's.

- Jay hasn't had one diamond album. Em has had two.

- Em has sold SIGNIFICANTLY more albums than Jay worldwide.

- Em is a global icon. Jay's worldwide recognition has been fairly recent, in ackowledging his legacy etc., he's always been accepted and reviewed, and praised all over the world, but he's never been absolutely GIGANTIC and proposed as a total genius, and reached every generation and type.

I don't even like to bring sales in to the conversation normally, but you're discussing popularity here. Eminem is a MUCH more popular rapper than Jay-Z.

Jay-z is a fucking great hip hop artist, he sells millions of copies but he isn't one of the biggest sellers in the music industry.

Jay-z sold +/- 450 000 copies of the black album during the first week in 2003 and Eminem did more than 600k in 2009 with relapse (his weakest album when it comes to talk about sales and Jay's did these numbers only once with Kingdom Come)
