Oh, I don't want to put forth the wrong idea. It's not to say that there isn't anything worth listening to in mainstream hip hop, but rather that the things that seem to be the most ubiquitous aren't all that great. There are exceptions, but there aren't enough to make a list like this have very many impressive artists on it.
Of course though, Kendrick/TDE and the creativity of artists like that is encouraging. I'm also happy about how well Macklemore did, and I'm sure I haven't heard everything out there that's worth a fuck. Not a fan of ASAP yet though...
Anyway, like I said, my point is that there aren't
enough exceptions to the rule of mainstream hip hop being sort of watered down and full of uninspired/unimpressive emcees to make a list of mainstream impact be taken seriously for the most part.
