Anyways here's my two cents, wordplay wise Big L was pretty average minus a few ones like the beavis line (which is overhyped as fuck) and (the I wasn't poor, I was po), but yeah he's not Possessed. The thing he had was shock factor, clarity, and humor. He didn't intend to over your head so that you could replay his verses 15 times over to get all the references he's throwing out, his was straight foward which I kind of liked. Another thing that's important is delivery and Big L always delivered his punchlines at the right time and was never monotonous when he threw out punchlines, so you couldn't really miss them, not to mention a lot of them (unless they were freestyles) fit full context into his verse and didn't just feel like some random non sequiter that disrupted the flow of the song ala Eminem, Lil Wayne.
Here's some great shock lines
I be placin snitches inside lakes and ditches
and if I catch aids than Imma start rapin bitches
Fifty g's is what the creep stole; so the next day
Knocked on his door and shot his granny through the peephole
I sex chicks, I'll even fuck a dead bitch
I never wear rubbers if I get aids fuck it
I dunno, I always liked straight foward lines rather than ones that try to go over your head, though I can appreciate well crafted lines that don't try too hard to be clever but pull it off with tact.
I will say though, that I find Chino Xl horrendously overrated in punchlines and his terrible delivery doesn't help, at times you miss his (shitty) punchlines. Not to mention how forced and corny some of them come off as.
I've never been a fan of I'm like_____ or punchlines that rely on allusions to make some clever wordplay.
