I'd say that's a little too far.
I do think he's harshly over-judged and yes, because he's white and whiny lmao.
I listened to his debut and it's pretty decent. And I read some of the reviews and they make out he's just aimlessly spitting about weed and childish shit throughout when in fact he has a lot of thoughtful and somewhat socio-political lyricism scattered too.
And to me it just shows it's a race thing and them wanting to compare him to Em because I see people like Jay who sometimes literally do nothing but brag get praised. And if you listen to Asher's rhyming, flows and content on his debut objectively - leaving aside personal bias, his appearance, and everything else, he's pretty good and deserves attention.
And deserves credit for trying to produce focused music, and I see so many black rappers who are so so, so much worse in every possible sense get praised by critics. And I don't want to make this purely a race thing but I do feel it's heavily influenced by that, and because he's middle-class.
I would hardly call him the most underrated in the game though... but yes he does get sidelined and treated like a semi=Vanilla-Ice from what I've seen which is totally unfair given his skill level, and the production on his debut is very consistent too. Throughout.
I also like the way he emphasizes words and rhymes certain words in a row. And, I can actually see where the Em comparisons come from, from hearing his debut. NOT on his content or anything like that, but due to some elements of his rhyme style and his emphasis etc. but most who compare him to Em just do so because he's white and goofy, not for that reason. Looking forward to his album anyway.
Right now he's still a little cheesy, and still a little... uptight. Like you see the video there and some others, it's like he's acting a certain way because he thinks that's hip-hop. I don't feel he's being completely himself, forces some slang etc. but either way, he has potential.
