Black Star Plots New Album, Plans To Record In Africa

Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) hope to hit Africa to record a new LP.

Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) released their debut Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star back in 1998, but they're ready to record its follow-up. Speaking with Billboard.biz, Blacksmith CEO Corey Smyth said that after several failed attempts at getting the two in the studio, the duo will head to Africa in 2012 to record new music and possibly their sophomore release - though concrete plans are pending.

"It's in the ether," he said. "We've had a few false starts in the past, but it just feels right this time."

Black Star, which will continue to perform shows next year, recently released "Fix Up" and "You Already Knew" off their Aretha Franklin-inspired mixtape Aretha. Though a release date isn't set in stone, the group plans to drop the offering before the end of the month.

2009-present will be looked at as a great time for hip-hop.

People are always saying it's not as good but...

When you consider since 09, we've had Relapse, Recovery, The Ecstatic, a Bad Meets Evil EP, a Jay / Kanye album, the Nas / Damien album, great debuts by people like Cudi and B.o.B, great albums from legends like Big Boi and others... and now a new Black Star album is coming?

There's a lot of great shit being put out or in the works lately.

Probably due to his association with Gorillaz.

I saw an interview where he said he's now an honorary member or something, and that name sounds like a Japanese cartoon name or something. So probably that.
