The best music i havent heard

It seems that the best music has already been released and its going BACK which is bringing forth the classics. While i source extensively from the previous decade from Ludacris, Jeezy, Chamillionare, Weezy...

Just wanted to get people's processes of digging up the music? Its no secret that the majority of the forum is made of tweens -early twenty late teen boys and girls- yet there seems to be a surprising amount of praise (old school section was HOTT at some point) for people like 2pac, Biggie, Andre 3000, Nas, Xzibit etc... have you guys actually LISTENED to these people or you just go off the hype?

I will confess, i've barely listened to 2pac, Outkast old school Snoop and absolutely ANY Biggie, Ice Cube, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Big Pun, Public Enemy, NWA, Wu-Tang, Clipse... nothing. It seems like for some of them, i KNOW i dont like them because of their popular tracks (Ice Cube's Friday being an example) or the overhype of the others (2 pac and biggie).

In fact, i find myself checking out more Yelawolf, Kendrick Lamar, John Connor, B.o.B and for the legends its the new stuff that gets me going (All 6's and 7's, Distant Relatives, BP3, Andre's guest verses). Would love ya'll to share your musical pallette (esp people like KillahBee, AbramIssac, MikeNUFC who seem to have a wider range than most)

I'm inclined to believe that the majority of posters who claim, "omg 2pacz--or insert said artist here--da best rapper everz!!!" are just following the crowd. Not to say they haven't heard a song or two from that artist, but I'm doubtful that most of them have listened through an artist's discogorophy once, let alone enough times to come to that conclusion.

Personally, I grew up on Biggie and outkast. I wasn't much into the hip hop scene, but the majority of my friends were. I was into punk / emo music. We listened to a lot of biggie while we skated. I memorized the words to gimme da loot and machine gun funk, lol.

Personally, it has to come naturally. I don't like when people are like yo check this, check that.

I always knew Tupac and Big but never really listened to them until one day I was bored and I downloaded their album to check them. It was more of a "Best Hits" from Tupac, though. So I liked his songs on there, and then I downloaded his albums but to this day I still haven't heard more than 2/3 albums of him.

BIG Though, I immediately loved his music more than Pac. I had his album since forever on my computer, but at the release of the movie Notorious, I decided to listen to the Ready to Die album. I think I was 15, and I loved it. Suicidal Thoughts being my favorite song on the album, and I also loved Big Poppa, Juicy, you know, the commercial hits.
Party and Bullshit (which is not on the album) is dope too. I think there's nothing wrong at bumping artists that people overhype or hate, if you like them well that's good for you, because you shouldn't be enjoying music for other people. I'd tell you to try to listen to one of their album, maybe you will like them, maybe not.

Though.. I was like you. I NEVER really wanted to check Nas because he always sounded monotone to me, boring. But when Distant Relatives was released, I don't really know why but I decided to listen to the album and I loved it. So I went back, downloaded all of his albums and bumped them.

Same with Jay and the Blueprint 3, I didn't like it so much but I was wondering why he's considered as one of the best (mainstream) rapper, so I decided to check out his albums. I loved the first two Blueprints, The Black Album but American Gangster was the first one I checked so I like it more than the others, just some preference though.

Curiosity.

Just try to give them a chance one day when you're bored and you really don't have nothing to do, maybe you'll find some new artists to bump.

Its very interesting that the people who seem to listen to the greats retrospectively have less "awe-factor" that those who actually listened to the music as it was released and experienced a few things from it. For example, while Trimss might think "Juicy" is good/cool, Block could go on and claim it to be hip-hop pinnacle.

I think that is what in general causes such vast disparities in how rap fans in general rate artists. There seems to be a skepticism when encountering artists from a era different from the one which introduced you to the Genre. (I know Premier is still stuck up on Melle Mel lol)

Out of curiousity, how much do you listen to 90's or even 80's rap and even when you do, do you think your appreciation of that music is "fair"?

I haven't been listening to much rap at all lately, mostly rock, reggae and blues...

I'll listen to anyone who appeals to me in any way... For example, I love Mac Miller, whereas the majority of this forum and other forums seems to hate him and thinks he's 'wack'.

As for 80s/90s rap, I listen to Nas, ATCQ, Run DMC, Rakim, Wu Tang, 2pac, Biggie, Cypress Hill, The Beastie Boys, De La Soul & NWA, just to name a few... I genuinely like those guys, and listening to their stuff is very pleasing.. And when you like something, you're bound to appreciate it, so I'd say yes, my appreciation of that type of music is fair.
