Okay, so I Need a Doctor came on the radio, and it was at the part where Dre says "you're about to feel the wrath of Aftermath, faggot" when I turned onto that station. And, those lyrics got me thinking. Aftermath is kind of making a comeback, or at least trying. They signed Kendrick Lamar, who is posed to be the hip-hop king of the new era if he drops a classic commercial debut, Eminem is dropping an album in 2012/2013 and had major success with Recovery and Hell: The Sequel did decent enough under the BME branding with almost zero promotion, Dr. Dre is working on Detox, and 50 Cent is doing his shit, and Slim da Flopster should be departing any day now.
It's kind of a repeat of when Eminem was signed, to an extent. The Slim Shady LP dropped and then it was followed by The Chronic 2001 after Dr. Dre's seven year absence. If that's not enough, when Dr. Dre dropped The Chronic, a year later Snoop Dogg released Doggystyle. Snoop Dogg and Eminem were two of Dr. Dre's biggest signees, if not the two biggest (50 Cent and Snoop Dogg could compete for second place). What if, just like in the past, Detox droops after good kid, m.A.A.d. city drops? This could relaunch 50 Cent's career, Snoop Dogg's (Snoop Lion) career, and solidifiy Kendrick Lamar's career. I hope I'm right and that Detox delivers if it truly comes out.
When it comes to the quality of I Need a Doctor though, that's another story. Same with New Day. I hope this isn't the new Aftermath sound.
Edit: Not to mention, when both Chronics were dropped and Snoop/Eminem was signed Dr. Dre was trying to build a label. Now, he's trying to rebuild one.
