Hip-Hop Albums You'd Recommend to Aliens

Postby RoleModel'Est96 » Dec 6th, '12, 15:52

I know the title seems stupid, but me and friend were talking about this. Imagine if some foreign visitors came on earth and found out us earthling had a genre we called "Hip-Hop".
What albums, artists & tracks would you want them to listen to that define Hip-Hop and showcases its uniqueness?

You can pick up to 10 albums and songs but only 5 artists.

It doesn't even have to particular be your favourite hip-hop artist -maybe just significant albums/songs/artists that have come out since Hip-Hop's humble beginnings in South Bronx in the 70s.

I'm thinking of making another thread in the General Music Section for things non-hip-hop. I'm interested to see what you guys would say.

My picks:
Albums

Songs
(This is a hard one)
The Message
Planet Rock
93' till Infinity
Fuk Da Police
Protect Ya Neck
C.R.E.A.M
Lose Yourself
Sucka N*gga
The World Is Yours
Hold Ya Head

Artists
KRS-One
Wu-Tang Clan
Biggie Smalls
Eminem
A Tribe Called Quest

I feel what I've put is decent, but still there's soo much more.

Also, if any of you guys are up for the challenge- how would you describe Hip-Hop? I'm guessing a large proportion of you on this forum are Hip-Hop fans, so how would you describe the culture, the elements- how different it is to the other musical genres, etc. (remember that know nothing about it)

And no-me & my friend weren't high when we had this conversation!

Why would you recommend a bunch of gangsta albums...then they'd think the human race was a bunch of violent thugs

I wouldn't say 3 Feet High and Rising is a gangsta album, neither are most of the others.
Radio? Lisense to III?

C'mon son!

You recommended SOC, that's enough to do it. If I was an alien and that was the first record I heard I would skip right over this planet.

haha, lol its a good record though
I tried to show Hip-Hop's diversity. SOC is one of the most significant albums in Hip-Hop history imo.

If your so bothered, what would you rather pick?

I mean, to me defining Hip-Hop and what you would show to aliens are two completely different questions. I'll think about what albums I would use to define hip-hop and then come back

Yeah, sorry for the misunderstanding. I guess I meant trying to introduce Hip-Hop to someone who was completely oblivious to it.
