The 20 Best Comebacks in hip hop history (Complex)

1. Dr. Dre
2. Nas
3. LL Cool J
4. Eminem
5. Will Smith

Eminem :

Eminem has always had commercial success; the idea of Eminem full-out failing is almost impossible. Even Jay-Z says that he's the best rapper ever—it's not easy to just up and bellyflop. That's not to say that he hasn't had the need to rebound: his 2010 effort, Recovery, was so-named for his troubles with drugs, but could also have applied to his much-maligned Relapse (a sub-par outing for which he himself even apologized in numerous interviews). He had taken five years off to deal with his best friend Proof's death, removing himself from an industry that needs constant attention.

With 2009's Relapse, his great return, he seemed not just off...but way-off: his pop-cultural references were dated, as if they had also taken five years off. This was no more true than when he was making fun of the already-dead Christopher Reeve on "Medicine Ball." And then Recovery dropped, showing that it was a fluke, beginner's bad-luck. "No Love," built around a Just Blaze sample and a strong verse from Lil' Wayne, sounded as if Eminem had been plugged in again. "Love The Way You Lie," his single with Rihanna, became the biggest pop hit of his career.

This is getting extremely annoying. Can we just have one thread where all complex articles go?

Leave it to Complex to bring up "dated" references.

When did Dr. Dre comeback? To make a comeback you got to put out music.

No because Em didn't invite me.

Kanye had nothing to come back from.

Him interrupting Taylor at an awards do and news anchors making swipes is hardly something to come back from lmao. It just gives him more material, that's not his career, that's just silliness.

That's like saying Em had to 'comeback' after the Moby thing.

A rapper has to come back from a badly received album, and a lowpoint. 808s & Heartbreak was critically well-received, and sold well, and was yet another surprising experimentation to everybody, which resulted in influencing (for good or for bad) the genre. Kanye was still climbing upward.

The only gripe I have with your post is your comment about 808's & Heartbreak being "well-received". People were mostly upset with the heavy use of auto-tune, and despite the positive reviews from critics, the initial reaction was that it was the weakest album he had released.

Obviously, after some time, people started to realize its genius and accepted it as a good album.

I do agree that the Taylor Swift incident didn't put a major dent in his career. It was however the beginning of his change in personality and propelled his ego.

Those positive reviews were still lower than the reviews for his previous albums.

He said "well-received".

You said they were positive.

So you're agreeing with him. lol.

Shut up

I still stand by my statement that 808s & Heartbreak was his least favored album when it came out though.

What 'change' lmfao?

Kanye had been like that from day one. It was just more visible because he was more famous, and due to the fact it was on live TV / a strange thing to do.

And yeah 808s was initially a mixed reaction, but so are most experimental and drastic changes from the previous. But it certainly wasn't a lowpoint, he didn't get totally blasted for it and it wasn't a dud in any sense; commercially or critically. So it can't be considered something to comeback from.

He had a 7 year stretch between The Chronic and Dr. Dre 2001. Between those albums, he left his label, started a new one, had one single, and tried to jump start The Firm, which didn't do very well.

It was definitely a comeback, and a pretty impressive one at that.
