Macklemore and Ryan Lewis exposed

Postby King Lance » Feb 11th, '13, 00:13

The No. 1 song in the country right now is "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, a rap group out of Seattle. Their claim to fame: They got the song to the top of the chart by themselves, without being signed by a major label.

They've bragged about this success in a video spoof and on Twitter.

But the story they've been telling — the story that's been widely reported — is not entirely true.

The truth is that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis hired a company to help them get their music into stores. That company, Alternative Distribution Alliance, is an arm of Warner Music Group, one of the most major of the major labels.

Still, the rise of "Thrift Shop" is something new. It's an indication of a power shift away from the major labels to the artist themselves. Clearly, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis accomplished a lot on their own.

The rap group spent their early years hustling and playing small clubs like a lot of acts. But they also used technology to build a devoted following on Twitter, Tumblr and YouTube.

They eventually got to the point where their touring was so successful that they could have been signed by a major label.

Instead, they went a different route. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took the money they'd made from touring and made their own album — a process that digital technology has made much cheaper.

To get their album to the top of the charts though, they needed help.

"You really cannot get a radio hit at this point without major label backing," says Gary Trust from Billboard.

Even in today's world of iTunes and YouTube, you still need the radio to become a superstar, Trust says. So Macklemore and Ryan Lewis hired Warner Music Group to get the band more radio play. That helped propel "Thrift Shop" to No. 1.

Yes, artists can do a lot on their own today. But to get to the top of the charts, they still have to work with a major label.

NPR is a great source for information, but I think the author framed this incorrectly.

The title of the piece is The Real Story Of How Macklemore Got 'Thrift Shop' To No. 1, and I think that's misleading. The thing is, they're saying that without a DISTRIBUTOR, the single would have never made it onto radio. They aren't clear enough in that distinction, they're almost equating working with a distributor (backed by a major, since majors have distribution) to working directly with a major label.

That's not really the story though. They have to work with a distributor to get the album into the stores, sure. But that's about the extent of it. The truth is, they made a fun and catchy song that sold incredibly well with little to no promotion, and since it was suited for radio, radio stations picked it up after the massive success they had selling it on iTunes.

NPR is great, but I wonder about the author's intentions here. It's almost like something you'd read on a hipster blog, some sort of shot at the top of indie success, trying to derail or take away from the legitimacy of their achievements.

What are you saying, exactly?

I'm not being argumentative, I'm just wondering what you mean by the comment. Is that a testament to their independence, or an indication of the influence of ADA?

Lmao. No time to "really" comment today, but will do so tomorrow.

But in short, isn't it fuckin obvious that you need some sort of deal with a distributor to get your albums shipped? Do people think they made the CD's from their own computer, and like mailed them to the postoffice...? Lol. This goes for every aspect of the industry, whether it's regarding airplay or whatever.

The thing about being independent, is that you make your own decisions. You spend the budget/money, or hire someone to spend it for you. You're not constrained to a label-contract that promise you X, but requires you to do Y.

Exactly.

Which is why the title of this thread (no offense to Lance5) is a little over the top. Nothing is "exposed" here. Anyone that would think that they aren't independent because of this aren't thinking at all. As it says in the article, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis hired the Alternative Distribution Alliance, not the other way around.

The distributor looked at what they had to offer, looked at the success they already had going, and agreed to produce and ship the physical product for a percentage. They didn't dictate anything about the album, because the album was already done. And linking it to Warner to evoke some sort of distrust of their independence is stupid as well, because of course Warner has a distribution company. That's not the same thing as having a partnership with the record label itself.

Record labels deal with talent, the distributor deals with the product. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis had the talent, a vision that was completely their own, and they needed a physical product. That's where the distributor comes in, and that's where it ends.

That's not exposing.. Dude wanted a boost on the radio, and it wouldn't have worked otherwise. That's not cheating at all.

From what I've read though, the distributor doesn't have anything to do with radio.

They produce and distribute the physical items. All of the marketing and promotion (along with the actual recording) of the album is handled by the label itself. In this case, that label is Macklemore LLC.

its odd that a song was out for two months and then all of the sudden started going mainstream a few months afterwards due to radio play

To me, that's more of an indication of their independence.

It took time to sell a ridiculous amount online, to build those YouTube views, to get that song out there. Instead of it being released and immediately taking off, it took time to build. To me, that makes sense.

See, normally radio is what will introduce someone to a song, and will continue to play it because people want to hear it after they know it. With this, people found the song elsewhere, and the radio eventually followed suit. From everything I've read, the distributor has nothing to do with radio promotion anyway.

I never really gave a damn for their music so I don't care but I'm posting in this thread to get my post count up.

Not to mention it's kinda annoying constantly hearing about these two since I live in Seattle and people are constantly bringing them up.
