Tyler the Creator: White People Can Use the 'N' Word

Postby AbramIsaac » Feb 28th, '13, 01:42

Well, looks like all us white folk finally got permission from a famous black guy to use the word nigger like...fuck, I don't know, we can say that shit now though.

HipHopWired.com wrote:Tyler, The Creator has a penchant for outlandish and bizarre statements, but he's managed to top his earlier exploits after saying white people can use the racially charged “n-word.”

The Boombox pointed out that while visiting Hot 97's Cipha Sounds and Rosenberg morning program Tuesday (Feb. 26), the Odd Future front man talked about his experience GRAMMY-nominated crooner Frank Ocean at the awards show earlier this month. The bombshell moment, however, came after crew member Taco asked Rosenberg if he's ever used the n-word and prompted Tyler to go on a passionate rant.

“We don't actually give a f-ck about that sh-t," said Tyler. "Mothaf--kers who care are the reason racism is still alive if you think about it."

Co-host K. Foxx tried to give Tyler a history lesson on the racist undertones of the word, but was met with indifference from the 21-year-old California native.

" I know, that's sick, that's cool," Tyler responded. "I guess people my age, we're not even thinking like that. But when you think like that, you keep the racism alive when that's not even on our palette."

Foxx then challenged Tyler on what issues he stands for, and the GOBLIN MC responded as expected. “Being rich and trying to have as much fun as I can,” he dryly answered. Tyler did add that the only time the term is offensive is if a white person [TR Note: This was added by the writer of the article, Tyler didn't specify race] is being disrespectful. Good to know he recognizes that, at least.

It depends on the context of the conversation, I'm watching the video now. I'm not sure he actually singled out white people as the only people that would offend by using that term disrespectfully.

@SliKKK That quote might have been taken out of context because Tyler seems to get it.

Yeah, the article writer seems to be the one making a big deal about it, so I'm watching it now. Since that's not an actual quote, maybe Tyler didn't mean to say that WHITE people specifically using that term is more offensive than another race if used disrespectfully.

The actual quote:

Tyler: It only matters if someone is trying to disrespect.

Yeah, so looks like Tyler has it right. The K. Foxx bitch on there was getting all uptight and self righteous about it, attacking him for saying what he was saying. "If you don't respect what they fought for, you wouldn't be doing what you're doing right now".

Yeah, valid point. Fortunately, we've moved beyond that phase of the fight for equal rights. There are still battles to be fought, but I don't think keeping your white friends from saying a word you routinely use in a benign manner is one of them.

He makes sense though, I think Morgan Freeman said something similar about black history month about how it keeps racism alive and shit like that. I think it really just is becoming an accepted term depending on how you use it of course. It's not meant to be negative most of the time when it's said anyway, it's usually said in a friendly way.

Oh, he's definitely right.

Especially since he doesn't make the racial distinction on who can say it. The title I have reflects the original article, but he specifically says that it's only offensive if someone uses it to disrespect. He even tells Peter Rosenberg to say "Fuck you, Nigger", just to show how he would react.

He just thinks beyond race, plain and simple. Not too shabby for someone that isn't exactly the most eloquent or socially conscious voice in hip hop.
