I used to drive 40-100 km everyday, but i don't have so much that free time anymore. :(

the different speeds are essentially changing the resistance when you pedal. so if 1 is the most resistance and 7 is the least, than having it at the 1st speed will require more effort when pedaling. thus more effective. likewise putting it on 7 would require little effort, making it easier going up hills.
