Hip Hop Icon Nas is a conscious MC who in past has “never really gotten into politics”. He has been critized in the past for making bold and sometimes misinformed statements to the media. Most recently he caused a major stir within the Black Community when he attempted to name his latest Untitled album, Nigger. Nas is truly an outspoken individual who continues to break boundaries, slowly becoming the leader that our younger generation can look up too. Today, I got to witness something that Nasir Jones claimed he had never done before…
Following the day of Barack Obama’s visit to the city of Newport News, Virginia…The students of Hampton University got a real treat by having hip hop star Nas come speak at their Voter Registration Drive for the Obama Campaign. With notes jotted down in his Blackberry, Nas spoke to the students about this year’s historical election, the importance of registering to vote, and why he is supporting Barack Obama.
I thought that the speech Nas gave today was absolutely amazing! “I never voted in my life” is the statement that Nas opened up his speech to the crowd of students with only a few seconds later…he celebrated that he was now a “registered voter”. He went on to say that “I never believed in politics growing up in Queensbridge…” and explained the role politics had played in his life previous to this year’s election. Nas was very open about his views on the current Bush administration, saying that he felt that Bush’s ultimate goal in office was to “rip all of the money from America” (referring to the current economy crisis).
Of course there was some serious Obama co-signing going on. Nas spoke about how much he believes in Obama and the change that he has promised to bring to office. He called Obama a person that young African American kids can aspire to become (comparing to how Tiger Woods made people want to golf and how he himself inspired people to rap), stating that you can tell that Obama is “touched by God”… Hitting home once again that it was important for everyone to get registered to vote (the deadline to register to vote in Virginia is Monday Oct. 6) so that their voice could be heard.
Nas spoke on other issues unique to Virginia such as slavery and how we could be the deciding vote in getting Obama elected President. He also mentioned little unknown facts about there possibly being a former president in U.S history with “black in their blood” (Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and others…DO YOUR RESEARCH)
After all the political talk…he gave the crowd what we wanted by performing his hits “If I ruled the World” and “Made You Look” before having to leave to catch a flight. After finishing up his mini performance he vowed that if Obama is elected president he was gonna come back to Hampton and celebrate by putting on a free show for the University!
Today was truly a moment that will go down in history…my history…hip-hop and politics coming together to make change where change needs to be made! No other election will have an impact on Hip-Hop as much as this one has had…and what rapper can represent Hip-Hop in the bond between hip-hop and Politics than Nas Escobar?
If you still haven’t registered to vote…WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!
