It depends what you'd be interested in. Usually for people who are starting out on reading, i'd say, go with what type of films you like...like..if you like horror, read a horror. I tend to only read horror and crime..and occasionally trashy chick lits  , because they're the films i like. I'm guessing if you don't like Harry Potter you most probably don't like things like magic and things that couldn't happen in real life no? I'd say Stephen King, but if you're just starting out then his do take a while to get into and you might get bored  I'd say some sort of crime/horror..they usually start straight away. Try Karen Rose. viewtopic.php?f=50&t=56204 ...or...just go here and see what takes your fancy viewtopic.php?f=50&t=56006 :flower:

Harry potter is fucking awesome w,iggaz! But eh, im reading the new Dan Brown atm, so far its my fav dan brown next to angels and demons. Ive read tons of fantasys when i was younger and i still love those, but they tend to be pretty long and slow so not good for a starter.
I'd recommand Harlan Coben, fast thrillers with intresting modern storys, check it out sometime.

Amen. Loved 'Promise Me' :D

Like Sophie said, think about movies you like and try to check out the books. If you like movies based on Stephen King's books, try one of them.. Like 'The Shining' or maybe 'Carrie'.
Speaking about movies.. 'About A Boy' by Nick Hornby is hilarious, one of my fave ever. It's short and well written, so it's a good book for start :p

Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. All the Dexter books are GREAT. The tv show based on the books is awesome as well.

Dan Brown, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and J.K Rowling are great writers to start with.. And like Sophie said, look for the genre that fits you.
