Local or National traditions where you live

Postby DrRapid » Oct 9th, '10, 18:47

I thought it would be interesting to see what local traditions or traditions done on a large scale some people have in their country or specific region. I'll just post a couple of pictures of traditions in areas in my country:

These are the "Castellers" who compete against others by building and dismounting a human tower without falling. There have been accidents in the past so there are obviously better safety measures now. It's done in some towns in the region of Catalonia, Spain.

This is the "Tomatina" which is done once a year in the town of Bunyol near Valencia, Spain. It's just a huge "fiesta" where tomatos are thrown all over the place. I went there this summer, it's a bit overrated due to the huge amount of people so you can barely move. In the end though it proved to be quite fun. It's quite digusting I know...

I don't know if anyone is going to bother posting or not but I thought it would quite interesting to learn something about other people's cultures by getting to know some tradition they have in their country. Maybe I'll just get a "cool story bro". :y:

We literally just watched a video about Spain yesterday in class and they talked about both those things.

Ah that's interesting. I suppose bullfighting was in it too, I didn't put it here though cause it's quite an obvious one, and I don't really approve of it anyway. I have been to "encierros" where you run from a bull if you choose to or you just watch by the side without the bull being hurt.

Here in Canada and probly lots of other places.. on April 20th (national weed smoking day) every year, specifically at 4:20 everyone gathers and proceeds to smoke a bunch of weed. its good times. :8)

Thousands of marijuana smokers and activists are expected to gather at the Vancouver Art Gallery for the annual 420 event Tuesday.

Locals and tourists alike will follow a tradition that began in San Francisco in the early 1970s, where a group of students met every day at about 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana.

The celebration has attracted about 10,000 people in the past.

“4/20 started with a group of people meeting every day to smoke marijuana at 4:20 p.m. and has grown into the largest annual worldwide protest,” said Jacob Hunter, rally organizer. “More than half of Canadians want marijuana legalized, yet despite decades of protests, studies and lobbying, our politicians are still not listening; even if it takes decades more, we will continue to protest in larger numbers until marijuana is legalized.”

The event begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 6 p.m.

A First Nations smudging ceremony officially kicks off the festivities at 11 a.m. and speakers — including Marc and Jodie Emery, Dana Larsen, David Malmo-Levine, Jacob Hunter and Kirk Tousaw — will address the crowd on both sides of the gallery (West Georgia and Robson) between 4 and 4:20 p.m.

Yeah 420 is huge here in the states as well...considering that's where it started, you swaggerjacking canadian. There's a large music festival near where I live that happens four or five times a year, drawing around 8k people, all of them high on various psychoactive substances. Other than that it's all hillbillys whose only type of culture is nascar and jesus.
