Writing A Rap Song

Postby Low Key » Feb 2nd, '10, 11:12

this topic is directed to all the lyricist's and rappers on TR Shady. basically it's just going to consist of a few questions, so i can get a better idea of writing processes (i just wanna improve, and get some ideas)

do you actually rap or do you just write for fun, or both?

do you always get the beat first, or do you look for a beat after you've written your song, or possibly do you make your own beats?

do you write on paper, or on the computer?

how long does it take for you to complete one song?

what inspires you to make a song?

have you ever been in a writers block? if so, how did you overcome it?

how did you start writing? and why do you write?

if you answer these questions, then thanks for your time (:

do you actually rap or do you just write for fun, or both?: both

do you always get the beat first, or do you look for a beat after you've written your song, or possibly do you make your own beats?: either way...i'll write something up & look for a beat...or get a beat & write something to it....or I could try to make a beat which is a whole other story.....my favorite method is writing without a beat though

do you write on paper, or on the computer?: computer...then i'll ink it up inna notebook

how long does it take for you to complete one song?: depends on how motivated I am

what inspires you to make a song?: alot......but mostly the feeling i'll have after I finish up a mixtape or something

have you ever been in a writers block? if so, how did you overcome it?: stop writing for a while & get back into it whenever the time is right

how did you start writing? and why do you write?: I started writing along ass time ago. ever since I heard The Eminem Show I wanted to rap.....so I started writing...then later started recording

Do you actually rap or do you just write for fun, or both?
Both actually. Mostly for fun though. And to clear my head.

Do you always get the beat first, or do you look for a beat after you've written your song, or possibly do you make your own beats?
I always write to a beat, 'cause the beat gives me the inspiration needed to write. Sometimes I do write acapella, but that's just 'cause there aint no beat I can use at that moment, and I have to get some shit off my chest.

Do you write on paper, or on the computer?
Both, depends on my mood. I prefer writing on paper though.

How long does it take for you to complete one song?
Again, depends. I'm a fast writer, though perfection takes time sometimes.

What inspires you to make a song?
Usually a beat or the mood I'm in at that moment.

Have you ever been in a writers block? If so, how did you overcome it?
Yes. Sports is a good remedy. It helps me to clear my thoughts..

How did you start writing? And why do you write?
I was never good at expressing some emotions through speech. So I used to write poems to express my feelings. That evolved into rap lyrics over time. And I just love writing...

do you actually rap or do you just write for fun, or both? Both, I began doin it just for something I enjoyed doing and was good at. Now I am beginning to do in a more professional manner

do you always get the beat first, or do you look for a beat after you've written your song, or possibly do you make your own beats?I have written to a beat maybe 3 or 4 times. I almost always just write acapella, idk why it just flows better without trying ti make it fit ya know. I usually look for beats to fit the song after

do you write on paper, or on the computer?I started my writing on paper now I have a laptop so I write on that more often. Basically anything I can write on. Hell been writing on cave walls if I can get some paint in my hands :toocool:

how long does it take for you to complete one song? Like Zu said I'm a really fast writer. I can bust out a 3 verse+ chorus song in 15 minutes. I usually think about the song alot before I even put the pen to paper, though some songs took alot longer than I would have liked.

what inspires you to make a song? Alot of things inspires me too write. If you've read any of my stuff you would know my Native American roots inspire me more than probably anything else lol. but my girl inspires me, stuff I've been through, life basically. I usually try to write about real things, unless its just a song about nothing.

have you ever been in a writers block? if so, how did you overcome it?Writers block will happen to ever writer. Its just what happens. When I find myself in a bllock I do a few things. Sometimes I free write, just write without thinking anything that pops up in my head. Sometime I wait for about a week, even if something does pop into my head, then bust it all out.

how did you start writing? and why do you writeLike Zu I started writing poetry my sophmore year in high school. It just sort of evolved into rap lyrics, that is the music I listen too for the most part. I just started gettin better and better, I'm a freshman in college and feel my lyrics are really goiod. I write mostly just to get stuff out of my head in a way thats constructive and other people can enjoy it too.

do you always get the beat first, or do you look for a beat after you've written your song, or possibly do you make your own beats? without a beat all the time.....i tried it once with a beat and it was awesome so from now on I'm gonna write to beats :D

do you write on paper, or on the computer? Ever since I got on Trshady it's been strictly computer....paper+2sDay don't go well

how long does it take for you to complete one song?a 16 lines verse for me is 15-30 mins..... so about 45 mins to 1 hour and 30 mins.

what inspires you to make a song?whatever topic i have in my head.....funny, serious, murderuos or political

have you ever been in a writers block? if so, how did you overcome it?for like a day or two lol :p

how did you start writing? and why do you write? Eminem and one day i just wrote a rhyme on a paper and it just took off from there.... i also practice my vocals every single day by printing out lyrics and rapping them with the music playing behind

do you actually rap or do you just write for fun, or both?
Both. I write better than I rap though.

do you always get the beat first, or do you look for a beat after you've written your song, or possibly do you make your own beats?
I use my written lyrics. When I feel like recording I look for a beat that fits the lyrics. That's about it.
I wanna learn making beats, one day.

do you write on paper, or on the computer?
Both. But thing is, some lyrics I write on paper can't be found on computer and vice versa. Usually, those lyrics I write on paper are not meant to be published but sometimes they're published.

how long does it take for you to complete one song?
Lyrics wise, I take at most an hour. But if recording a song, I take about 3 hours. And the mixing I take at least an hour.

what inspires you to make a song?
Smokers, beautiful people like Leah Dizon, my friends that I wanna fuck. Etc etc. Sometimes, random things like a dustbin inspires me.

have you ever been in a writers block? if so, how did you overcome it?
Many times. I ignore it. It just comes back suddenly. To me, writer's block is nothing to worry about unless you have date due for your song.

how did you start writing? and why do you write?
Rachel Fang Lui Chia is the utmost inspiration for me a couple years back. I started to just rhyme, write poems. And I write ONLY because of her. But then I moved on, so I moved on.

do you actually rap or do you just write for fun, or both? Just for fun for now :D

do you always get the beat first, or do you look for a beat after you've written your song, or possibly do you make your own beats? A little of both....its harder for me to write to a beat then to find a beat fora song I've written

do you write on paper, or on the computer?blackberry and I have a notebook

how long does it take for you to complete one song?usually a week or two but I have several projects running at once so I do a little of each everyday until one is done

what inspires you to make a song? have you ever been in a writers block? if so, how did you overcome it? Writers block blows ass...usually just don't write for about a week-month and get back into it when I'm ready...no rushin and writing something whack you know

how did you start writing? and why do you write? I write cause I think I'm good at it...and after being a big hiphop fan all my life

do you actually rap or do you just write for fun, or both? both

do you always get the beat first, or do you look for a beat after you've written your song, or possibly do you make your own beats? i've done all possibilities

do you write on paper, or on the computer? start on paper, transfer to computer then print it out..my paper always ends up messy

how long does it take for you to complete one song? a real long time, it took me 3 weeks to finish Memory Lane, 4 weeks to finish Let It Rain and about 2 weeks to finish my verse for A Lot To Learn. I usually write a verse over and over about 4-5 times before I'm satisfied with it enough.

what inspires you to make a song? I dunno, other music, personal shit idk?

have you ever been in a writers block? if so, how did you overcome it? I get high

how did you start writing? and why do you write? thought it was fun and i figured it'd probably be better than jerking off all day
