Andi Susanto, a 31-year-old security guard, said PT Nojorono Tobacco Indonesia, the maker of the brand of cigarette he was smoking, had offered to pay for his medical treatment, which reportedly cost 5 million rupiah (£335).

"The company's officials have talked to my family and we agreed to settle it amicably, as an out-of-court settlement. They will pay all the medical expenses," he said through bandaged lips in an interview with local media.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown.

The security guard told Indonesian media that the Clas Mild cigarette had exploded in his mouth while he was riding his motorcycle.

He told the Jakarta Post that he had started smoking when he was a schoolboy, and that he had never experienced any problems with his habit before. However, he said he would quit smoking after the incident.

A spokesman for Clas Mild said there were no plans for a recall.

"We are communicating with the police and still waiting on the forensic laboratory tests," Iwan Sulistyo, the brand's marketing chief, told the Jakarta Globe.

"We do not put any strange materials in the cigarettes, so we think that this is a weird case. This is the first time for us."

Indonesia is one of the most profitable tobacco markets in the world, and more than 60 per cent of Indonesian men smoke.
