However, widespread racism of the past, and the homophobia of today, are two very related mindsets. Racism in the past was so widespread because people just weren't comfortable with other races. They were ignorant to the truths, and went on basing their views mainly on feelings that were propagated by those before them, fearing the unknown.

Today, homophobia is mainly due to people being uncomfortable around gay people. They base their views and feelings on the culture of the past. They believe that we can deny these people rights, because their rights in this aspect have previously been seen as unimportant, much like the racism of the past.

Gays will eventually have the same rights as the rest of us, and I think that's important, mainly because the rights of everyone else are just as important as my own rights.
