How Much $$$ To Rent Or Buy A Studio?

Postby X'ed Up » Apr 3rd, '10, 20:00

When I get out from my school at 3 PM I'm gonna walk to Publix and start working there for 8 weeks getting minimum wage($7.5 an hour) so I can rent or maybe even buy a studio room. So, I wanna know how much money it is to buy or rent a studio in South Florida.

$50 dollars an hour is a low (low) price for studio time. Some places could be as high as ten times that, and beyond. I'm speaking on the lower end, only because you'll be making minimum wage, and don't need to worry about the upper echelons of studio time.

So...you're not going to be able to do it on a month-by-month basis. Just forget renting or buying. Figure out what you want to record, get the instrumental ahead of time, and then show up and bang out two songs an hour. You can do it quicker, but that's a good estimate to put out a full fledged song with Overdubs and warm-up vocals.

So, I'm guessing buying a studio is a fuckload, right?

Yes. Most smaller operations build their own.

Something as simple as a portable booth (fully treated and encased) will run somewhere between $6,000-$8,000. That's just the booth. To say nothing of the audio hardware and software.

Just buy enough equipment for a decent computer set up. You don't really need to do actual studio stuff at this point.

Well, considering my family's in kinda welfare and I'll have to provide the money for my project all by myself, and I'll only be able to make about $1,200-1,900. So do you think i can make an amateur studio set up with that kind of money?

Yes. But i think I'm ready. Plus, my father's girlfriend is/was a recording artist and can teach a few tricks in the studio and can even provide me with producers.

Yeah, without a doubt.

If you don't have a computer, you can buy one of those for $300-500 dollars (lower-end) that can run simple multi-tracking software. You can use free software, such as Audacity, or shareware, such as Reaper (great program, btw). You can pick up a decent mic for $100-150, and a preamp from $50-100. You can skip the preamp if you opt for a USB mic.

You can make a Pop Guard with stuff from around the house, most likely. All you're left with now is some headphones, and you're set.

That's a basic setup that some of the people here one the forum use with good results.

Here's a thread I made a while back, I think it might help you build your own studio on a budget.

I guess I'll try that. And maybe even visit the studio once a month to record a good couple of songs. Since you said that lower-end studios rent for about $60. I guess I'll forget about buying a studio. Well, thanks a lot AbramIssac. :worship:

No problem. You can always record individual songs, mixtapes, demo's, etc. on the home setup, and save the money to do an album (when you get that far) in the studio, if you want to.
