I have my Slim PS3 right next to my good old PS2. Why would I need backwards compatibility, they're both plugged in anyways, you know? Shouldn't be so hard for people to put them beside eachother or something.

I wouldn't worry about getting an old ps3 for backwards compatibility because I heard the emulation isn't that good. Just get a used ps2 if you want to play ps2 games. I got the fat version right before the slim came out. I should have waited.
