Selling his soul

Em has always been open about his life in his lyrics and multiple times he has said he has sold his soul to the devil in multiple songs. Its most clear in "my darling" and "careful what you wish for". What I don't understand is, why has no one asked him what he means by this? Does he believe he sold his soul to the devil or is it a metaphor for choosing fame over his life which led to his drug habit and other problems?

He means he's selling the true values that we as humans should value. He's compromising his quality of regular life, his privacy.

With fame comes a huge magnifying glass on you at all times. So by selling his soul he just means he's trading his most intimate privacies at the price of being famous. For his art.

As once you get THAT famous. There's no turning back. Even if he stopped making music today and faded into oblivion, he's had too much of an impact. His face is too known. There's nowhere on planet Earth he can go. Fuck that. I would never want to be that famous.

So yeah, "I sold my soul to the devil... I'll never get it back" sums that up.
