ever thought about record sales this way ?

Postby ,-,'-{Bar}-',-, » Jul 8th, '10, 16:05

because im starting to market an album i can sell off my own back, i started to dwell intro prices and the buisness side of selling music.

so i never thought of something this way so i dont know if anyone else had. but on average when an artist sells 1 million records, that has took in over 1 billion dollers/pounds going by the average of £11 a cd (the average price of a new release over in the uk) but i beileive in america its like maybe $18 ? or so..

think about it, even if an album only sells 100,000 times that by $18....how much money is actually involved in music is astounding even when its small numbers.

*cough*...

1 million records sold at $15 is 15 million...not over 1 billion.....if this is how good you math skills are, might want to consider hiring an accountant

just fucking around with you

Ok... Recovery Price on order date: $9.99
1 million copies sold
1 mil x $9.99 that's roughly $10 million....
From that 10 million places that sell the cd takes a cut, I'm sure Shady Records will take a cut, Aftermath will take a cut, Interscope will take a cut...
Cost of production, shipping etc etc etc... doesn't leave much for the artist, especially when you think Em has to pay Dre.Dre, Pink, Lil Wayne, Rhianna and Kobe out also... not to mention all the producers, and paying for all the beats...

Artists make more money nowadays from being famous, endorsements, and own businesses like clothing and drinks and whatever they can sell with their names? :zipped:

id be interested 2 no how much the average artist gets from album sales, as people have said, everyoned needs to get paid from the label to the store selling it....

i think the label gets a big cut....artists are always trying 2 set up there own labels to get around this....and jay-z paid his last label to get out of his contract so he could release BP3 on his own label roc-nation

if a cd sells for £10, id guess the artist gets around £2

I was told artists gets a dollar for every album they sell. So if eminem sells an album, he's made a million. Now touring is where he gets most of his money from.

Does the price go up if they've produced some of the tracks?

What do you mean? If Eminem produced his entire CD for example, no help from anyone else, then he won't have to pay anybody (but himself) for production.

Think of it this way, Dre producing a song for Eminem is an expense, Em pays Dre
$X amount of money for the track, then he'll pay him royalties afterward.

So if Em puts out a cd and has 15 producers on it, he has to pay all of them, plus their royalties.

Em makes $10 mill from sales, but he spent 7mil on production, then he's left with 3....
(these numbers are just examples)

I would also assume Pink and Rihanna could care less how much Em is making on each CD as long as they get their shares. Ya dig?
