Old Eminem > Nas. He was much better with his syllables...his rhymes all lined up. Nas tended to use a lot of multis that didn't correctly align (for example: a fiend-drops-his-Heineken (6)/(be)tween-the-spots-that-I'm-hidin-in (8)).

Can't say the same thing about current Eminem, though. And obviously, 03-07 Eminem was terrible and the comparison can't even be made.

Outside of the technical aspect, it's kind of apples and oranges. Nas was more of a street rapper.

Fucking hard one this, based on pure lyrics, not including cadence and what not, I think I'd give Em the edge - I'm not certain though.
Bar 2pac, Em has to be the most "relatable" rapper ever. I mean I could listen to something like the 1st verse of Sing For Moment and feel like somebody is describing my childhood, no other artist does that for me. Em can paint a picture with words, which very few other rappers can have the ability to do, in my opinion.

But if there is one rapper tht can match Em when it comes to lyrical ability, its Nas.
I mean every verse on Illmatic to me is a classic, every single line on that album is perfect.
I t Was Written, lyrically, is also very underrated, I'd actually say Nas was at his peak around that time, he had one of the best verses on both OB4CL and The Infamous, both of which crack my top 10 hip hop albums.
The thing about Nas though, for me, he's at his best when he's talking about Street shit, ie. Illmatic and It Was Written, but it's impossible to say when Em is at his best.

Some will say Em is at his best when serious (Rock Bottom, Sing For The Moment) some will say he's at his best when angry (The Way I Am, Marshall Mathers) some will say he's at his best when he's funny (Criminal, My Fault) some will say he's at his best when he's just straight spitting (Role Model, SDGAF) and some will say he's at his best when storytelling (Stan, Brain Damage), plus lot of his tracks contain most/all of these elements.

So I think for the fact that Em has more dimensions to his lyrics than Nas, I'd give it to him, but when both are at their best, its impossible to choose between them.

Oh, not this shit again...

This kinda thread on an Eminem forum only leads to insulting and beefing among the members. Huh, what do you people think, that someone will actually prove that Eminem is better, and everyone will agree? Or the other way around? No, not a chance. We've had a thread like this last year, and it was mostly insults about Stannery in it. I was one of those idiots who didnt give valid comments too, I gotta admit. Im lot more educated in rap now, thats for sure.

My point is, its all about opinions. I know, I know, forum is a place for discussion. But this thread...after the 5th page...members takin shots at each other. So we might as well lock it now.

But thats not what we gon' do, right? Heh...

Yes. In more ways than one.

Nas is a pretty one-tone rapper, Eminem can do any style, any flow, any subject matter. Anything. Not only that but... Listen, Nas is a supreme lyricist but... He's just kind of like a very clever lyricist, he brings a sound of nobility and literacy to rap. But Eminem is a genius. I wouldn't call Nas a genius.

Nas is just as versatile as Em.

He's nowhere near as versatile.

Eminem's first (major) LP was like fucking acid rap / shock rap, his second was social commentary, a fireball of subversion, his third and fourth were introspective and on fame. His fifth was a horrorcore album, which played like a movie and Recovery is a little bit of everything done artistically. With every Em album you get a new chapter. A new set of styles, a new sound, a new lyrical direction... With Nas, you get slight variations on the same formula.

With Nas, you're pretty much getting the same deal everytime. He's going to talk about black on black violence, police brutality, africa / slavery etc. You have different beats and slight varations on ideas but he rarely stretches out of his comfort zone at all.

You can take Eminem songs from the same ALBUM and they sound nothing alike. And I'm a Nas fan but saying he's as versatile as Em is a joke. He's not as versatile with his subject matter, with his executions and CERTAINLY not his flow. He may go faster or slower from time to time but Em completely re-invents his sound whenever possible. Nas doesn't do that.
