Hold on, Slaughterhouse Did What?

I love clips like this. The ones that expose info about the inner workings of the industry that you otherwise would have no clue about. Slaughterhouse recently sat down for an interview to talk about music. Except this time, it focused on music they passed on. Interesting, to say the least. Here’s my breakdown on what the four lyricists missed opportunities.

Joell Ortiz

What he passed on: “Good Love“
Who snagged it: Sheek Louch
My opinion: This would have been a good look for Joell. I like Sheek’s music. At the end of the day it was a nice record for Sheek (which should have been bigger), but I wonder how Joell would have sounded over this. Yeah, this would have been a nice single.

Joe Budden

What he passed on: “I’m A Hustla” x “Bring ‘Em Out“
Who snagged it: Cassidy and T.I.
My opinion: This was around the time when Joey couldn’t get a single cleared to save his life. I can see why he passed on “Bring ‘Em Out” (that sounds more suited for T.I. anyway), but I think “I’m A Hustla” would have been perfect for Joey’s flow. I guess he was still pissed with Jay at the time. Come to think of it, didn’t he put a freestyle out over the beat later?

Crooked I

What he passed on: “How Do You Want It“
Who snagged it: Tupac
My opinion: Crazy to believe he passed on this, but in hindsight, I can’t see anyone else over this beat other than Afeni’s baby boy. Would Crooked have gotten K-Ci and JoJo on the hook though?

Royce Da 5’9

What he passed on: “Renegade“
Who snagged it: Eminem & Jay-Z
My opinion: Well, Royce’s version leaked on mixtapes. While it was hot, the Jay/Em version is considered one of their greatest songs ever.

Like the old ladies at church say, “everything happens for a reason.” It is, however, crazy to think about what could have been had the cards been played differently.
