Why are you people talking like TV and newspapers are the be all and end all of media? In the past 5 or so years, new forms of media have EXPLODED in the world.
Sure, television is controlled by the parent companies of the networks. For example, Fox News is nothing but a device for Republican propaganda. Most other networks have ALWAYS had a slight liberal slant (although nothing even CLOSE to as laughable as what Fox News puts on air).
Same with newspapers, corporate websites, and any media that is funded by a parent company. People are putting money into those outlets for a reason - to use them as a source of influencing your opinions.
However, thanks to the internet - and particularly the evolution of web 2.0 - we DO have access to REAL sources of news. (ps... web 3.0 is coming in just a few short years - so if you think the internet has evolved in tremendous and awe-inspiring ways recently, be prepared for it to happen all over again). WikiLeaks just published tens of thousands of war documents from Afghanistan. The news outlets and the propaganda machines put their own spins on it - but who the fuck cares anymore - we have access to the documents themselves! You can really make your own opinions!
We have intimate access to everything from the gulf oil disaster to the Pakistan floods. We have twitter accounts being authored by politicians, athletes, and snookers from Jersey Shore alike. The internet has become, and continues to grow into, a powerful open-source of information. It finally allows the ambitious and concerned to find their own facts and make their own judgments - without relying on corporate owned news and their horrid slants. The internet is the free, open and fair playground that this country has been yearning for years for. And it will always be that way.
Wait, net neutrality is being threatened? Oh. Fuck. Never mind then. No, the media can not be trusted.
