Well people always say "what's left" like there's a limit on what you can write about and how and like he's covered EVERYTHING in six albums. Really? You think Em has explored every concept his mind will let him explore in six albums lmao.
He's spent the majority of time, in fact almost all of it just studying, commenting, dissecting, poking fun at and all-round laying waste to his own head. His own life. I mean what's left? A whole fucking world is left, I mean think about it, he's one of the most self-obsessed minds in musical history...
the SLIM SHADY lp, the MARSHALL MATHERS lp, the EMINEM show. The first three album titles have his own name in, in three different forms. Then lets look at some of the singles...
MY name is, the real SLIM SHADY, without ME, the way I AM...
And those are just the single titles. If we go onto the albums we find more songs directly about him...
I'M SHADY, Remember ME?, Marshall Mathers, Cleaning out MY Closet
And those are just some of the ones directly titled about him. Almost every other song is then indirectly about him. He's written so few songs from general perspectives or just... I mean why not go back to storytelling and experimental formatting, there's so many places to go.
I mean it's pretty hilarious lmao. But most geniuses are self-obsessed. But man, what's left. I mean original creation is limitless. Just take for example what Kanye just did with "Power". I mean Em isn't thinking expansively or big or artistic like that anymore. He cornered himself into a box of realism from The Eminem Show onwards.
But he can get out anytime he wants. Because he's that good of a lyricist and rapper. People only say what's left in respect to his life, shit he can talk about regarding himself. Because we're so used to everything being about him. But there's no need for future work to be about him. Simply BY him. Weaving his authorship throughout his work is definitely important but I feel he knows who he is and what he's done as an artist so well now that the sky's the limit on truly new material from here out.
Take a look at B.o.B for example. I mean just taking a concept / phrase like... What goes up must come down and creating "Don't Let Me Fall" from it. And he encapsulates a whole feel, theme into that song. Em is head and shoulders above the rest when he tries to be innovative. So I just wish he'd drop the personal bullshit, drop the silly shit and create brand new concepts and ideas.
So I think it'd be such a shame now if he puts the mic down limiting so much of his material strictly to himself, his own views, his own life etc. I mean he needs to look outwards.
