LTWLY dominates summer song polls

Did everybody have an excellent long weekend? Now that summer is over, it's time to put away our summer jams and break out some more wintry music (stuff like the National and Kanye West — the audio equivalent of a snuggly wool sweater or a warm pea coat). With summer in the rearview mirror, it's time to declare the official song of summer 2010. At the beginning of the season, we predicted that Lady Gaga's "Alejandro" would be the dominant track of the summer months, and though it had great success, it did not reach the heights of some other songs (including Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" and Katy Perry's one-two punch of "California Gurls" and "Teenage Dream"). So late last week, we asked the readers of the MTV Newsroom Blog one last time: What was the official song of the summer of 2010?

In the end, the votes proved that you can't ever keep Eminem down. "Love the Way You Lie," the second single from Recovery that features an assist from Rihanna, took first place by a wide margin, picking up 57 percent of the total vote. Perry ended up coming in second place with just shy of 20 percent for "California Gurls," and after that, it was a steep drop off to the third place position (which belonged to Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It" in a minor upset). Rick Ross, Usher, Taio Cruz and Travie McCoy all got a handful of votes, though not enough to really make a dent. Surprisingly, Drake's "Find Your Love" ended up bringing up the rear, which is somewhat of a shock considering how huge the Canadian MC is at the moment.

Few people saw "Love the Way You Lie" coming, as it seemed to have too dour a beat and was about too heavy a topic to be the sort of summer anthem that "California Gurls" was. However, it's impossible to count out the excitement surrounding Eminem's triumphant return, and when you combine that with Rihanna (whose touch turns everything to gold) and a high-profile video starring Meghan Fox, and you've got the recipe for a ubiquitous tune that could be heard coming out of every car, boombox and club in the world.

It's also the best song. Hell, it's not even on the same planet quality wise as all that other stuff. IMO sometimes things like that DO count to determine such things. All the other songs mentioned were specifically engineered to be a "typical summer hit". Eminem did "domestic abuse ballad with deadly outcome". And somehow "won". I love it.

Doesn't seem like a song they'd play in a club... but then again, clubs here in Sweden play the most retarded shit.
